So I guess it's not much of a stretch when you're talking about a fusion to say L4-sacrum.
Docs invent their own words - they don't care about what's "correct". A lot of times it just depends on whether the account wants everything verbatim or if they expect you to clean things up and put them in proper format.

And they are absent, not absence. But like I said, it's not pronounced like if you were saying the student was absent from school. It would be pronounced just like what you are hearing.
