Actually, the word is "mattering" and not "matting." To matter is to form or discharge pus, and mattering is the crusty substance on the eyelids and the goopy substance in the eyes, like with pink eye. Eyes are "mattery" or "mattered."

It's matting, I bet. Mattering would be more precise. But matting around the eye with pink eye is that dried up junk that sticks your lashes together and has to be loosened up with a warm, wet cloth.
