Does any one know why a person with exaggerated symptoms would be called a hypochondriac? I know it also refers to the hypochondriac region, under the ribs, which makes sense when you break down the word, but how does it relate to a person with exaggerated symptoms????

by that person *thinking* he has a certain symptom, *feeling* he has a certain symptom or disease, and he may not always have that. Some people are called hypochondriacs when they *seem* to have every diagnosis they hear about or read about, i.e. symptom exaggeration.
