cm, mm, etc.

Do you always put a hyphen between the number and the measurement? what is the rule on this.  For instance:

Once most of the disk was evacuated, we placed two 12-mm/12 mm Caspar pins.

We made a transverse incision about 2 fingerbreadths cephalad to the sternal notch on the left side about 5-cm/5 cm in length.

• cm, mm, etc. - ALH
  • You hyphenate when it is a compound modifier sm - Lyndia
  • I do not hyphenate unless it is an adjective i.e. 5-mm stent or the stent was 5 mm - MT50
