I believe. gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are a rare tumor of the gastrointestinal tract (1-3% of all gastrointestinal malignancies).
GIST is a form of connective tissue cancer, or sarcoma.

"It's another one of those undocumentable words that are becoming commonly used."
The only reason these words make it into the medical language is because some people don't know how to research to find the correct word. It is called the proliferation of a mistake and when gone unchecked (because of ignorance) words like these become "sanctioned."
Other proliferated mistakes that I have seen include neuroforamina and ostiomeatal to name just two more but there are many I cannot think of at the moment.
A good medical dictionary and reliable resources will help to stop this trend.
