There were only 551 hits on Google for hydroxycodone which means this is not an accurate spelling. Before you even think of trusting Google's info, you need to check the number of hits. If there is not a VERY large number of hits, do not trust the results. When in doubt, check you books. I have all updated drug books, and this is not any. Call a local pharmacy if you still think this could be a very recent drug. The doctor probably made a mistake. It is better to question than to guess and make that mistake. My doctors make up words all the time or just get confused themselves. Let the doctor make the final decision or QA if you have to go that route. I had to learn this the hard way in the beginning.

Like you, I have been running into this situation more and more lately. The Internet may not solve much, but it sure points out how unreliable all those word books are that we've been trusting all these years.
It's gotten so I don't trust any eponym reference unless it gives me first & last name with bio (hey, why not shoe size and zodiac sign while we're at it!)

Back in the early 80s I loved Stedman's but I found way too many discrepancies, even called them once and they said if we find any other discrepancies to feel free to call them and let them know because WE are the MTs and they need our input.
However, I prefer Claudia Tessier's Surgical Word Book, Vera Pyle's Medical Terminology book, and then the internet where you can find the manufacturer's website and see the CORRECT spelling.
Just my humble opinion....JMHO....

books - if I can't find it in my books, I go to the internet, but not before. Sometimes the internet can just give a whole lot of inaccurate info that takes a long time to go through (not that it isn't helpful in a lot of cases - I just don't always trust it).

"chemotherapy." It makes no sense as there are hundreds of medications (where you would hear dosages) that comprise chemotherapy. Would you rather be corrected by people who are not paid to help you, or would you rather your QA catch a blunder like this? Up to you.

Here's another question...If a dictator says leuks, do we type in leukocytes or leukocyte esterase? I have to follow AAMT BOS. I've gotten conflicting reports from a couple of QA people over the years, so I never really know what to go with and wind up typing leukocytes but curiosity is killin' me.

Smiley or one of the other major helpers can help there. I'm a book person.
If you don't have the AAMT BOS (second edition), that would be the first place to start. It comes with a CD which makes it easier to look things up. I'm not crazy about the BOS as I feel it is rather clumsy, but it's compiled from the books (as well as several others) I'll mention later. These rules are adapted specifically for us MTs. If you come across a good deal on an American Medical Association Manual of Style, or the Chicago Manual of Style (I may have goofed up on the titles of these books as I have a cocker spaniel's head on my lap on the couch and can't get to my books without disturbing her), these are excellent resources. I once had a little paperback book that I carried around for years which was grammar and punctuation for writers. It was a handy little book. Maybe you could find something similar, compare it with BOS, and make notations in it.
Another way to keep brushed up is to read. Read good books. Read newspapers. Read the classics. Aside from having great stories, those great novels are wonderful sources of terms that do pop up here and there in our work. Keep in mind that our docs are highly educated, so we have to do our part to keep up. I have seen posts where MTs get stumped on regular English words and phrases, and it shows they don't read. When I was asked to staff my transcription department, I picked the readers. It made all the difference!
Bottom line: No matter how we feel about it, every MT needs his/her own copy of the BOS. The next runnerup is a good English dictionary (I prefer American Heritage, a collegiate version, as it delves deeper than just giving definitions). Of course, the big Dorland's or Stedman's for our medical terms.
