Beta Blockers

Beta blockers have also been studied for the treatment of orthostatic hypotension.9 The three agents most widely studied are propranolol, pi�dolol, and xamoterol. Propranolol�s mechanism of action is believed to be antagonism of beta-controlled vasodilator effects of catecholamines. Pindolol is a nonselective beta blocker with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. Patients with orthostatic hypotension may have reduced sympathomimetic activity, and the agonist properties of pindolol account for its usefulness in these patients. Xamoterol, a partial beta1-selective agonist, has been shown to be useful in patients unable to tolerate pindolol. Because xamaterol is an investigational agent, its usefulness is limited. Nevertheless, a New Drug Application has been filed with the FDA.
