you want to get techical. Would you say bilateral amputation? I believe the singular would be used if it were stated this way: Mastectomy, bilateral or below-knee amputation, bilateral. Otherwise I think bilateral mastectomies and bilateral amputations etc.

What was wrong with the correct answer you got
on MTChat? By the way, are all these questions you're posting on every MT board you can find from your coursework or a test? They certainly have the appearance of school or test questions. Remember, employers read these boards, too. They can figure out which of their applicants is cheating.

Unfortunately I cannot find a "rule" on this either, but if you change "bilateral" to "both" or "right and left" it does not change the meaning of the sentence but you would use the plural, tibias.
In the same way in your example, I believe it should be "examination of the hips, knees and ankles is normal bilaterally." (Consider if "bilateral" was before the word hips instead.)
Again, just my opinion -- tough question! Especially in a sentence fragment such as a diagnosis...
