pityriasis rosea, a common acute or subacute, self-limited exanthematous disease of unknown etiology, the onset of which is marked by the presence of a solitary erythematous or salmon- or fawn-colored herald plaque, most often seen on the trunk, arms, or thighs, followed by the development of papular or macular lesions, similar to but smaller than the initial lesion, which have vesicular borders subsequently that tend to peel and produce a scaly collarette.

pityriasis rosea
a self-limited eruption of macules or papules involving the trunk and, less frequently, extremities, scalp, and face; the lesions are usually oval and follow the crease lines of the skin; occurs most commonly in children and young adults and is frequently preceded by a single larger scaling lesion known as the herald patch. Syn: pityriasis circinata, pityriasis maculata.
