I had my bottom wisdom teeth pulled and the dentist told me that unless I had the correlating top teeth pulled as well, the top ones would "fall" or drop because they have no lower teeth to rest upon. Hope that helps.

It makes sense to me. I haven't heard that before, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I would assume they are measuring into the esophagus from the edge of the teeth.

in the context of your sentence doesn't make a whole lotta sense. I was originally thinking the patient lost dentures from the transfers, admissions, etc., so could not eat well, but the "sounds like" word you give is too similar to edentia.
