I just keep battling with myself over this one! Could someone please give me the correct hyphenation for non-ill-appearing. I've been changing to not ill-appearing when possible to avoid!!

You hyphenate "well-appearing female", not "she is well appearing". Hyphenation is difficult. You hyphenate two adjectives appearing before a noun, such as "small-sized amount". See if what is modifying the noun would make sense if standing alone. Small would, but sized would not.

You are right in that it is confusing. I hope I have helped you in some small way.

Can anyone explain to me why you would not hyphenate small-to-moderate amounts in an easy-to-understand meaning by the BOS. I've looked and looked and looked for an answer for this one. Hyphenation is "not" my strong suit. I really appreciate any help.

If you can't find it as one word in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, then you should hyphenate it.
