I had never used this site before, but browsing the posts today I saw your message and decided to check OneLook.com. Wow! I have put it in my favorites and I am sure I will use it a lot in the future!!!! Thanks.

The cause of death in Brugada syndrome is ventricular fibrillation.The episodes of syncope (fainting) and sudden death (aborted or not) are caused by fast polymorphic ventricular tachycardias or ventricular fibrillation. These arrhythmias appear with no warning. While there is no exact treatment modality that reliably and totally prevents ventricular fibrillation from occurring in this syndrome, treatment lies in termination of this lethal arrhythmia before it causes death. This is done via implantation of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which continuously monitors the heart rhythm and will defibrillate an individual if ventricular fibrillation is noted. Some recently performed studies had evaluated the role of quinidine, a Class Ia antiarrhythmic drug, for decreasing VF episodes occurring in this syndrome. Quinidine was found to decrease number of VF episodes and correcting spontaneous ECG changes, possibly via inhibiting Ito channels.[9] Those with risk factors for coronary artery disease may require an angiogram before ICD implantation.

I just found VFFTC on there as I couldn't remember it and was having a major brain cramp. Always remember if it sounds like "B" it could be "V" and check both.
This site has helped me out a lot with those docs that like to abbreviate everything.
I actually had one doc that dictated, as fast as he could talk, under physical exam, WDWNLAM with no clue as to what part of the PE he was getting at. It took me a minute to realize he was abbrieviating "well developed, well nourished Latin American Male."

I think I use the following site more than anything else. It's a great all-around site for all things medical, but the abbreviation look-up is awesome! You can also look up abbrevs by definition. It also has a medical dictionary, ICD9 code search, Rx look-up, US Rx drug spelling, skin conditions, hospitals worldwide, medical associations, and more!

You can search on part of the word. Also it never hurts to try googling the word, especially if you have some other pertinent words to use in the search as well. If you're close enough, Google will sometimes give it to you. There's also Google Suggest, particularly helpful if you know the begining of words or phrases but not the end. As you type, it starts giving a list of suggestions. Hope some of that helps.
