Hasson cannula, nothing under catheter. Vera Pyle confirms Hasson cannula. No Hassan anywhere. Which surgical book are you referring to? Tessier's? I had her original book which had lots of errors in it.

If you don't have Stedman's Medical & Surgical Equipment Words book you should get it. This book is amazing. Pretty much any piece of medical/surgical equipment is in there. It is worth its weight in gold. If your company doesn't offer discounted books, you can purchase it a Amazon.com either new or used, and they have great used book. I bought my entire collection of Stedman's words book used. All of them are in at least good condition.

But it is not the final authority on medical terminology. The medical field is growing and changing all the time. New procedures are developed every day and old ones fade away. Doctors in one part of the country may use a different terminology than doctors in other parts of the country.

Transcriptionists need to learn to be flexible and use their common sense as well as reference materials. Even if Stedman's says it should be "whatever", if the doctor says it a different way, that may be how he/she wants it to be spelled in the report. As long as it is not something totally off the wall that cannot be found anywhere the way the doctor says it, then I think the transcriptionist should respect the doctor's wishes unless told otherwise.

If it is something totally off the wall, I would leave a blank and leave a note for the doctor.

During the course of an aortogram, AAA repair and bifurcation graft, he exchanged 0.025 glide wires with 0.035 s/l "Mire" wires, removed the sheath and inserted the bifurcation graft. Mylar maybe (?) but was not able to verify. After deploying the graft, he passed a s/l "AquaTempo" 5-French catheter. I may have a few more of these gems before the report is finished. He is naming every single brand of all the obscure pieces of equipment he can lay his hands on.
