The expander software I use is part of Softmed. It has 2 lines to put your abbreviations in. I type in a drug in lower case in the short form part and the drug as it should appear in the long form part. IE...I would put "ativan" in the short form line and "Ativan" in the long form line. Then all I ever have to do is just type the drug in all lower case and it will auto cap from my expanders. You have to do this for every drug that you find, but when you are all done, you won't have to worry about generic or brand. This works for any drug from Avelox to Zoloft and in between. I hope this helps.

As I posted earlier, Kay Ciel is a brand name of potassium chloride just like K-Dur or others. KCl is the chemical abbreviation or symbol for potassium chloride by using the periodic table. It is no different than when the doctor dictates in labs Sodium 140, K 4.2. K is potassium, Cl is chlorine which contains a chloride ion (or something like that my chemistry is rusty). Unless the doctor specifies that he means the brand name Kay Ciel, then always go with KCl the generic as that won't ever technically be wrong or a patient care error.
Brand name/generic -- Versed?
Hi..I can't seem to find Versed as a brand name drug. On searching the Internet I find Midazolam, with capitals, and even found versed in parentheses after it, but I'm pretty sure Versed is the brand and not the generic name. Can anyone validate this? Nothing at all comes up on www.rxlist.com. Also send me your good web site link for looking up drugs. Rxlist doesn't seem as good as it used to be. Thanks.

I asked this question on yesterday, but I guess I need to clarify my question.
I am having trouble knowing when to capitalize the first letter of a medication or not when I am typing it in a sentence. What is an easy online reference that will help me to decipher this correctly?
Thanks so much for any assistance.

and a VERY good one that was recommended to me by someone on this board is
www.medicinenet.com and then click on medications. i also like the way they divide up their alphabet - instead of giving 10 pages of the letter *L*, you can choose *La - Lc* or whatever.
