Yes, you can, but it is "more proper" to start it out, "A CT scan of the head..."  or The CT scan, or No CT scan.  My English teacher would be shocked and appalled (her words) at the way we scimp on our writing these days.  I used to think she was a stuffed shirt, but I now have ultimate respect for her.  She had a doctorate in English and studied in some really great places.  Another thing I especially remember was that she had "blue hair" from a rinse she used and she wore those orthopedic high heels with laces some days.  I miss her.
