Can somebody help me figure out the difference between these two??  The report I am doing is for an injury to the hand where the skin was torn away.... Which one??  Anybody have a trick to get these two straight??

I know the actual definitions... But there is such a subtle difference between forcibly extracting and ripping away that I can't seem to get it through my head. In this last report the man had his skin on his hand removed in an accident.... I went with a skin avulsion.... But I keep second-guessing.
