Subject: Avulse vs evulse
An avulsion is a ripping AWAY, like you rip the skin off a chicken. AAAA, as in Away.
An evulsion is a pulling OUT, like you pull a tooth OUT. OUT the EEEE EXIT. Or, "EEEEEE!" as in the shrieking of a person having that tooth evulsed.
Lame, I know. Sorry.
The difference is subtle. So subtle, in fact, that unless you are doing an oral surgeon who actually does say "evulse," you can pretty much expect to be hearing "avulse" all the time.
You may be struggling over nothing. YOU know that evulse exists, so YOU think everyone is going to be using it. But they won't.
If it's emergency medicine, it's going to be avulse. If it's most surgery, it's going to be avulse.
If you have trouble remembering them, stop trying. Write them on a bit of paper and keep it taped to the side of your monitor. Seeing it daily for a while will get it to stick in your mind. For what that's worth.
Avulse = away
Evulse = EEEK! Out!
