have a reference for this?  I'm not arguing the point, but I don't understand why it would be one spelling for one area and a different spelling for the other when both are being used as adjectives preceding a noun.  I thought it was just mucus when alone, as a noun, and mucous when used as an adjective.  I didn't know that it was site-specific.  Any reference?
