By the way, I was referring to the demonizing and stereotyping of the Muslim world as a whole. I think that was clear in my post.
What would I have done? Who cares. I am a medical transcriptionist who lives in midwestern America. I would have listened to what Middle Eastern experts who were actually from the Middle East would have said. After all, it turns out that many of them predicted COMPLETELY the mess that is now Iraq even before we went to war. Bush did not consult a wide variety of experts. Rumsfeld, after all, is from Illinois.
What I would not have done is invade a country that was not involved in 9/11.
Obviously what WAS done post 9/11 was not the right thing and perhaps a Dr. Phil approach would have been best in some regards, although I think you mean negotiating. I think invading, killing and being killed should have been a last resort, not a first choice. I think some armchair cowboys in Washington got very excited at the prospect of accomplishing their invasion mission in an oil-rich country that was primarily Muslim. They thought it would be easy. Those that knew the MIddle East warned them it would create a mess of far-reaching and disastrous proportions. We thought we were going to teach them a lesson (you know, those dark people with their strange religion and bizarre customs) not to mess with the mighty U.S., but it is we who have received a nasty nasty lesson.
