I feel for you folks who see this cartoon as racist. That's not sarcasm, I actually do have sympathy for your point. After all, there's no getting around the ''southern strategy'' mindset of conservatism, the years of using racism as a wedge, so that the Republican party could be seen as representing working-class white values, even as it strangled the working class and destroyed the social institutions that the civil rights battle made possible.
That said, the history and symbols of racism loom so large in our country, that you'd be hard-pressed to find a good way to satirize Obama (which, as I said before, I don't think this cartoon is actually doing) without *someone* feeling the attack was racial. And I'm sure that the administration (or rather its spokespundits) will make full use of that to deflect criticism.
It's hard enough to talk about issues these days, navigating the stupidity that surrounds us, talking points and snide jabs replacing intelligent conversation, without having our satire shut down, too.

*hugs* That's OK. I know tensions are high. I feel the s/m
same way. I am trying not to, though, because we have to make the best of what we have. I just need to stop thinking about it, for today at least. :-)
