that a lot of people are suddenly going to start availing themselves of this preventive care? ERs are full of people on Medicaid-type programs. They have coverage, they just don't use it for whatever reason, until they show up in an ER. And there are ERs that have to treat them, even if they have a something minor that would definitely actually necessitate emergent care. They can't be turned away. The reality is most people without insurance do have options for care or can receive preventive care through other means. Local hospitals here perform free screening mammograms, PSA testing, BP checks, cholesterol checks, etc., several times per year. They provide education and counseling for people with positive or high risk results. Many, many physicians devote a percentage of their practice to "charity care." People don't use these services now so what leads you to believe this massive reform in administering insurance will change those behaviors?
