You can thank the conservatives for the mess too. This has been designed by the conservative party for the past 30 to 40 years and they used social manipulation to do it. Thanks to them, we are very close to the level society was in the 1920s and it is not an accident. And you're right, the conservatives don't want government. The current conservative mantra is for free market capitalism with little to no government. This is why Bush has voted the way he has since he came into office.
However, we cannot look at a specific individual to get us out of it. The reform needs to start at the bottom. And a good place to start is to start voting the liberal ticket and paying attention to whom we are putting in office, and when they stop doing what they say they promise to do, get them out. That is mostly the democratic ticket, but it is not exclusive. Nixon, as a conservative, did more for the liberal party than most democrats in the latter part of this century. Didn't make him very popular with his fellow republicans.
The American people in general need to be more active in the political process and stop leaving it in the hands of the affluent. There is a reason why things are bad across the board for the average American. It is because for the most part, the rich and affluent conservatives have been running things for far too long.
It's a good bit of mess, but we can't just walk away and we can't expect any one person to fix it.
