the rank and file did not lose faith in the bargaining power. Yes, union leaders became corrupt....and rich, if they weren't corrupt from the beginning. Going back to Teamsters Jimmy Hoffa, yes he dealt with the mafia and probably died at their hand BUT he brought better working conditions, better pay and benefits to the Teamster workers which DID filter down to non-union workers. I don't know why people will gag at the thought of corruption of union leaders and still support corrupt politicians. Union leaders HAVE to benefit their workers or they would stop paying dues and there would go the leaders benefits. What incentive do politicians have to benefit workers? Think about it. In any event, the unions have lost their power to bargain, wages, benefits and working conditions continue to go down.
While MTs are far from being unionized, I can tell you straight up, an effective union would stand up for the workers and would not tolerate workers sitting around waiting and begging for a few crumbs of work. But the anti-union people spoke when they elected Ronald Regan, an ACTOR for God's sake, with no experience. It's not the unions per se, it is the ability of the American workers to bargain that makes the difference and we don't have that ability anymore..
I hope all the anti-union people are happy with working conditions today.
