Two husbands who were union workers. One IBEW, one Teamster. BOTH said there were workers who didn't carry their share of the work load...not much different than MTs who cherry pick for instance.
#1 IBEW husband said at the time or Reganomics, when Ronald Reagan, himself a card-carrying member of the actor's union, said he would break the unions, it would be the downfall of the American workers.. Regan succeeded in breaking the backs of the unions. When union workers lost the ability to bargain, they had to start taking wage concessions......and guess what? Union wages went down, so did non-union wages follow suit. When union workers got better working conditions, better wages and better benefits, so did non-union workers.
#2 Teamster husband is a radical retired Teamster. While he also complained that there were lazy workers who rode on the backs of the hard-workers, he also said that the union does not support such and more times than not the union would uphold the firing of such a person. He has a Teamster retirement that is the envy of most people and he has retiree health care benefits even though we pay about $700 a month for that. While he was working, his union dues were around $35 a month and that covered our insurance. Teamster retirees today will not enjoy those benefits.
Do some research on the history of unions. Might not hurt to watch the movie Norma Rae as well.

The theory behind democracy and two parties is after two terms of one party, the other party comes into office for no more than two terms. It is so the two parties meet in the moderate middle and no extremes of either are reached. Far right and far left wingnuts take the country to such extremes, it destabilizes the masses and civil disorder will erupt due to the stark contrast between the two parties extreme beliefs. Well, I think that as I have viewed all the posts, there is reason to be concerned about the educational system in this country and what people rely on, progress or tradition.
But, bottom line is the country is in a state of turmoil like never seen since 1929 and for that very reason, everyone should want to vote for the other party unless they are wealthy and want tax breaks. Which is always the case.
Home schooling by mothers who aren't able to educate and lackluster teachers have added to this country of people who are so devisive, they appear to hate each other. They say a common enemy brings people together, but even with the corruption before us, lies and deceit by the GOP, costing us all so much for years to come, hasn't done the job. It is pretty hopeless.

we get laughed at and told we are asking for handouts.
I still believe that the best way to revive the banks is to go through the homeowners. Isn't bailing out and giving money to the big buisnesses still essentially trickle down economics? It's going to take too long for this stimulus to reach the average citizen. By then too many people will be without a job/home/food, etc.

In a prior post I made the following offer:
.....no amount of money would induce me to volunteer to be tortured (you know, beaten cut, burned - severe pain or harm). But cut me a check (certified only, please) with a number followed by a whole lot of zeros and I would be waterboarded (strictly in the interest of science). Our special forces are trained to withstand this and other 'harsh' interrigation techniques...... It's scary and unpleasant but way different from having your fingernails pulled out or a field generator and alligator clips used.
I had in mind more like $500,000, but yeah, for enough money I would certainly consider that an offer I couldn't refuse.

voiced deep concern over delays in health care and
epidemic prevention reaching Katrina victims, and
urged U.S. authorities to accept Cuba's offer of 1586
disaster-trained physicians to prevent a second wave
of sickness and death.
Latest reports indicate the U.S. State Department is
backing away from the offer, implying they are not
needed.
Up to this point, there been a clear need for more
medical help for Katrina victims, said Peter Bourne,
MD, Chairman of MEDICC and former special adviser on
health in the Carter White House and former Assistant
Secretary General at the United Nations. The Cuban
physicians are accustomed to working in difficult
third-world conditions without the resources and
supplies most of us are accustomed to. Since they are
just an hour away, it is a shame that they have not
been allowed to join our committed medical corps
already.
He is joined by other physicians, medical educators,
international health experts and a former U.S. surgeon
general associated with MEDICC, Medical Education
Cooperation with Cuba. From 1998 through 2004, MEDICC
has provided medical electives in Cuba for nearly 1000
students and faculty from 118 U.S. medical, public
health and nursing schools.
Cuba has been recognized by the UN, Oxfam and other
international organizations as a leader in disaster
response, expertise that could be saving lives now,
said Doctor William Keck, former long-time director of
the Akron, Ohio Department of Public Health.
A 2004 Oxfam Report, Weathering the Storm: Lessons in
Risk Reduction from Cuba, states that there are real
lessons to be learned from Cuba on how to safeguard
lives during extreme natural disasters, including
getting medical attention to vulnerable populations.

On Tuesday, August 30, Cuba first offered U.S.
authorities hurricane relief in the form of 1100
disaster-trained bilingual physicians, each equipped
with 52-pound pound backpacks of medical supplies,
including rehydration therapy, insulin,
anti-hypertensives, and medications for systemic and
topical infections.
On Saturday, September 3, Cuba increased the offer to
1586 doctors, ready for immediate deployment and
prepared to stay as long as necessary to help wherever
needed. A Cuban spokesperson said that as of today
there has been no official response from the U.S.
government.
Cuban disaster relief experience spans 45 years,
mainly in hurricanes faced by the Caribbean island and
in coping with disasters confronted by other
developing countries. Another nearly 25,000 Cuban
health professionals provide longer-term health care
services in 68 countries, under
government-to-government agreements.
Cuba trains 10,500 medical students from 27 countries
at its Latin American Medical School -- 65 of them
from poor and minority communities in the USA. (See

What an irony that the first U.S. MD to graduate from
the school this August is a young African American
from New Orleans, said Diane Appelbaum, RN, NP, MS.
He just passed the U.S. medical boards and is eager

poverty-stricken areas now devastated.

Because of substandard wages and the increased benefit of being on Welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing, and Medicaide, it seems only immigrants WANT to do these insultingly low-paying jobs. I am talking about a wage where a family can be together, both parents are not working two jobs, and thus not taking care of the kids, another social problem, and employed taxpayers are also CONSUMERS who drive the economy, but if you are not making a living wage, you cannot participate in the economy. I'm 25 and in college. Right before Bush got re-elected, my Composition class was discussing the state of things (we had just read a sort of anti-war book). Anyway, I was the only one (aside from my Professor) that spoke up against the war in my class. The others were so angry with me (how dare I be unpatriotic!) that I was seriously afraid people were going to jump me or something!! The same thing happened in another class around the same time. I haven't had a class discussion about it since then, but I'd be curious to see if they all feel so passionately for the war now.

In an uncertain world, reason should prevail. Besides, I have an axe to grind. My chemo drug runs $6,000 per month (who can afford that). I have had to fight insurance companies like a pitbull with lipstick (kak). I have watched my entire life go down the toilet due to illness and I have worked hard my whole life, paid taxes, obeyed the law, etc., and now..........I can try to at least make an impact on something that means so much to future of our country.

Citizens' rights are violated every day by our police with "tasers" and other "nonlethal" things but somehow they manage to kill. One guy practically bragging about how big he is and how the taser really hurt him. We already have tasers that police use and abuse. If you think it is that benign, what the h@ll do they need equipment for controlling citizens for? Just like national ID sounds benign enough to those who refuse to see it for what it is. There are lots of things that seemed benign to some while your civil rights were being thrown in the toilet and then as time went by and people become complacent, BOOM, all of a sudden you find yourself screwed over and wonder how that ever happened! While Billy was president I could not stand him (I voted for him the first time but after 6 months was disappointed and by the end of the first year with him I loathed him and cringed anyone I saw him or his wife "the anointed one". However, with all that has happened over the past few weeks he is finally starting to make sense.
I just think the country has done such a dis-service to Hillary and voted in a man that came from nowhere (and has done nothing).
