can't recall something absolutely stupid we insisted on doing, despite being forbidden, even begged not to, by our parents? Learn from their experience? Oh, please, I needed to make my own mistakes!
My parents were on record as telling me not to do a whole bunch of stuff that I did anyhow. None of it was as cataclysmic as getting pregnant and most of the stuff they never found out about. To tar them with the brush that I deserved for decisions I made while being immature and bull-headed is simply wrong.
And once your kid proves that she IS a kid by doing something you were powerless to prevent what do you do? Cast her into the outer darkness? Or try to help her deal with the consequences?
Nowadays a lot of parents seem to go for the quick fix. Abort, eliminate the evidence, no harm, no foul, back to school in two days. Don't 'punish her with a baby.' Your kid gets in trouble at school, it's the school's fault; go raise H with the principal. Kid gets in legal trouble, bail him out, get a lawyer, and deny, deny, deny.
I think all this teaches a kid there are virtually no consequences to their actions. Everything is negotiable. So to have Palin handle her daughter's indiscretion within the family in this way is, I think, exemplary. And to go ahead and accept the VP nomination with all this simmering in the background, ready to boil over, took a big set of brass ones, in my opinion.
We will never really know the reasoning behind how the relationship with boyfriend was handled. Not really our business. Would not even by our business if Palin had actually been elected VP and certainly is not since she was not.
