Let me tell you something about myself. I am as white as a marshmallow and I am ashamed to say that I grew up in a small southern town that had a sign that I remember as a young child that read (and please don't be offended, I am trying to tell you how I feel about it), "N***** don't let the sun set on your head in this town." As a small child my heart bled for these people that I didn't know. What a horrible thing! There were no blacks in the schools I attended. As an adult I met these people and some became my good friends, others were more racially biased with a bigger chip on their shoulder than I could imagine. One of my dear friends is a doctor. Once he hugged me affectionately in the hospital where we worked because of some small something-or-other I had done for him, don't remember what. Gasps from "some people" were audible. I hugged him back affectionately. (This was in the 70s). He is my dear friend to this very day. He told me how he grew up in the ghetto and his mother did laundry (he didn't say whether for blacks or whites) to put him through medical school. I don't think he really considers race in anything. He has been a guest in my home many times and I welcome him each and ever time. I have the greatest respect for him for struggling to make something of his life.
And Martin Luther King. I have the greatest respect for him and I have always thought his wife (sorry I forget her name) was just the loveliest lady. Never mind her color.
And Rosa? Rose? (again forgive me), the lady who I believe refused to sit at the back of the bus. Again, great respect. She stood up for herself and her people and for what she thought was right..
As for Barrack Obama........while I do not support his stated plans for his administration if he is elected, I would certainly rather take a chance on him than on John McCain. For that reason, I plan to write-in Lou Dobbs. HOWEVER, if it looks like McCain is going to win, I will vote for Obama. My beef with him is that he voted for the bail-out and he supports giving amnesty (whatever either candidate wants to call it) to illegal aliens. Before you start assuming what I mean, I assure you I believe in LEGAL immigration but illegal is illegal!! I do not believe Obama is a terrorist and I do not believe he is a Muslim. I DO have a problem with his attending a church that preaches Black Power and racial division. I would have the same problem with John McCain if I learned he leaned toward White Supremists.
I cannot possibly imagine what it must have felt like to be considered at best a second class citizen but again, I do have feelings, very deep feelings of right and wrong, and slavery was wrong. Making any race of people sit in the back of a bus, refusing them service and generally treating them as somehow inferior is wrong.
I believe most of us have moved past that era and while SOME people may still make it difficult for the black race to achieve success, there are opportunities, I believe, in this great nation for any race to better themselves if they are willing to work for it. There are people, black AND white who feel somehow the government "owes" them. To me the worst kind of humanity is "white trash." This refers to whites who are to lazy to work. I heard one white local person actually say, "Why should I work when I can stay home and get $800 a month?" Why indeed? Do you think I have any use for such white people? I most certainly do not.
I think it is high time ALL of us stop looking at the color of a person's skin and start looking at the person. We are ALL brothers and sisters in Christ.
I certainly have never meant to make disparaging remarks to you. Peace?
