is if by scrimping and saving the lower end of the income scale gets enough money together for that big expenditure...they will have to save much MORE to afford the sales tax because it would be the same sales tax paid by the rich. To me, that doesn't seem as far as the straight across the board 10% tax. If they make $100 they pay $10. But if they want to save some of the $90 left toward a big purchase, the sales tax is not going to bite them. Believe me...10% with no deductions to the higher echelon of society will put plenty of money in the tax coffers. And it will make a lot LESS incentive for "special interests." Also much easier to budget.
To get an equal amount of revenue into the government, I am afraid a sales tax would hurt a lot of us. Because everything is taxed...food, clothing, you name it would be taxed. Because...the rich will still be able to afford anything they want and the lower income folks could never have anything under that basis. You want class warfare...buddy you would have it under a sales tax.
The 10% seems more fair to me across the board. Would generate more income for the government...and THEN, by the same token, the government needs to learn to run on a budget TOO. Just like the rest of us. This is what you have to spend for the year. No borrowing from anyone, you can't meet it, you decide which programs to shelve. PERIOD.
