My family came from Tennessee to Arkansas/Oklahoma in a covered wagon as well. They went to Texas for awhile right after the war because everything was destroyed. My GG-grandmother then made the trip by covered wagon to Oregon at age 80+ with a son. Can you believe? She lived to be 91. She was a frail person too. I wish I had inherited those genes but nope, I'm a corn-fed, heavy weight American.
Like you, I hated history and then got interested in my dotage and have spent the last quite a few years catching up.
You are so right, there is no room for all of us old dogs anymore in anything. Sometimes the younger generation would do well to heed our warnings I think.
