suggested previously is that it excluded gays who are christians. With what I'm talking about it completely separates ANY faith-based ideals from unions. A union would simply be a legal state. However, with this system, people would be able to carry out whatever religious-based ceremonies they wanted to without stepping on anyone else's toes. For example. If you and your husband are christains, you go and get married in a church and uphold whatever beliefs you have. For it to be legally recognized, you would have to have a union.
By the same token, if Mary and Sue want to get married, they can go to their church and recognize whatever their beliefs are. They also would have to have a union in order for it to be legally recognized.
This would separate out different belief systems from the central concept of "marriage." It allows everyone to practice their beliefs without bothering anyone else, but also allows everyone to enjoy the legal benefits --- and that part would come with the unions.
