If you knew the beginning of social security in the first place and what it is actually used for, you wouldn't want it in the first place. But, once again that was the government's way of telling you they wanted your money and once again, government made sure you handed it over. Forced taxation again. At least 401Ks were something that private citizens could put aside for themselves, which ultimately would earn far far greater earnings over a lifetime than social security ever would and those who had one would be able to have much more to live on upon retirement. It depends on wher your 401K ended up. I do have one but I much prefer an IRA and it doesn't have to be all put in the stock market, neither does.
Social security = forced taxation versus your own private savings to do with as you please. There is a difference, which is why citizens should be raising cane about even considering taxing 401Ks, which is exactly what Obama has proposed to do. If you think you don't have anything now, you just wait.
