fundamentalism, then it does imply militancy. Leave it off and it only means someone whose beliefs are fundamental as opposed to moderate, as in Christian fundamentalist. The Jewish equivalent is orthodox.
Rather than say ''militant Muslim fundamentalist wacko'' the term Islamist was coined (only a few years ago, as you point out but no less valid a term for what they are.)
