No women/no non-whites - It's cultural baggage. How about a mixed ethnicity candidate?

Posted By: Observer on 2005-08-07
In Reply to: You know, if America is not ready for a woman president now, when will they be? sm - Democrat

Would like to see Obama, at least as a vice-presidential possibility.

As diverse as America is - still pretty racist deep-down (and misogynistic).  We need to become more color-blind as well as able to accept that women can be strong powerful leaders also.

for the same reason they hate any other ethnicity other than white...sm
evangelical Christian living in America. They delude themselves into thinking that they are not bigoted and afraid of anyone different than they are, but those are the basic facts.

I happen to be a Christian myself but do not condone the extent to which the republican party injects religion into everything, and I strongly believe that unjust wars throughout history are always conveniently waged in the name of God. I especialy object to the hate being spewed at rallies without admonisment by Palin or McCain, Traitor, Kill him, etc.

I feel so sorry for Barak and his wife and children. Hopefully they are able to shield the little girls from all the ugliness.
It is not the same at all, not picking on a specific group, race, or ethnicity....sm
as a matter of fact, some of my worst dictators are AMERICAN, they hate dictating and so act like little kids and speed talk, trip all over their words, slur everything together, mispronounce without correcting themselves, chew, burp, rattle papers and x-rays, etc., and then will correct several paragraps because they "forgot" this or that. At least foreign docs have an excuse, and many try to enuniciate clearly, spell things, out, etc. There is no comparison here...complaining about high percentage of difficult docs in your queue is not the same as drawing a "cartoon" that points directly in one direction, is poorly disguised, and is dispersed and disseminated in a national, hugely circulated newpaper.
What happened to women sticking up for women?

Yup, there are some whites who will
vote for McCain just because Obama is black, but don't presume to think all whites are like that.
Whites to be in the minority by 2042

WASHINGTON — White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2042, according to new government projections. That's eight years sooner than previous estimates, made in 2004.

The nation has been growing more diverse for decades, but the process has sped up through immigration and higher birth rates among minority residents, especially Hispanics.

    It is also growing older.

"The white population is older and very much centered around the aging baby boomers who are well past their high fertility years," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank.

"The future of America is epitomized by the young people today. They are basically the melting pot we are going to see in the future."

The Census Bureau Thursday released population projections through 2050, based on rates for births, deaths and immigration. They are subject to big revisions, depending on immigration policy, cultural changes and natural or manmade disasters.

The U.S. has nearly 305 million people today. The population is projected to hit 400 million in 2039 and 439 million in 2050.

That's like adding all the people from France and Britain, said Steve A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies.
White non-Hispanics make up about two-thirds of the population, but only 55 percent of those younger than 5.

By 2050, whites will make up 46 percent of the population and blacks will make up 15 percent, a relatively small increase from today. Hispanics, who make up about 15 percent of the population today, will account for 30 percent in 2050, according to the new projections.

Asians, which make up about 5 percent of the population, are projected to increase to 9 percent by 2050.

The population 85 and older is projected to more than triple by 2050, to 19 million.

I think whites will be a minority before too long. nm

I am not afraid of a black man raised by whites. sm
Flame away, but.....What I AM afraid of is people who cannot see the forest for the trees, those who are so bamboozled by his smoke and mirrors and snake oil, how this "black man raised by whites" is going to pay for all the pie-in-the sky promises he is making. We all know socialized medicine does not work. Look at all the Canadians coming here for their medical procedures etc. How much money can he take from the "have's" to give to the "have not's?" So if I make over $250K, then I have to give money to somebody who doesn't work and will never work? And don't even get me started on his stand on the abortion issue. Conversely, McCain does not have all the answers either. I don't know who would or who does, but I do know this: It is not Obama.

First of all blacks AND whites live in Harlem
The ignorant comments you refer to came directly out of Harlem and was played for anyone and everyone to hear. Did you not hear the comments made by citizens there? Don't call others names if you don't know what we're talking about.
I think you have the 2 parties mixed up. (nm)

sorry sam, got the messages mixed up
your right. I thought that gourdpainter was saying people on this board were going to be responsible for attacking Obama then I thought she was calling us skinheads. HA HA HA HA....definitely good thing I went and took a dinner break. Now I understand what she was saying and what your reply was. Thanks for clarifying. Sorry, didn't mean any offense to you. I just get irrited at being attacked all the time.
I have mixed feelings on this.

I actually see both sides.  I don't like the idea of government telling businesses what they can and can't do because that is scary to let the government have so much control.  However, if you are getting government money, government should have a say in where that money goes.  This is a tough one for me.  Like I said, I can see both sides.

I know...the sky is falling....someone actually seeing things from both sides.  What are the chances?

    Mixed messages...(sm)
You basically just said we are all in this together but pi$$ on the poor people.  Unbelievable.
    I have mixed feelings about
legalizing marijuana.  I think that cancer patients, MS patients, etc. should have the option of using if they so choose.  However, I'm afraid that if we legalize it, it will just lead to more of our kids using it because it is more socially acceptable.  One of my biggest pet peeves is those people at parks who think that because we are all outside that their cigarette smoke won't bother other people.  It is bad enough that non-smokers have to deal with THAT let alone legalizing marijuana and having to deal with people smoking that around us in parks, at ball parks, etc.  I seriously would be super ticked off if I saw someone smoking pot at my son's T-ball game whether it is legal or not.
    Mixed butt? ...(sm)

    That was just pitiful.

O'Reilly is a SELF-PROCLAIMED traditionalist, not an independent.  Look it up.

    mixed feelings
I also have mixed feelings on the subject of alcohol. I am not in support of restricting this free choice at all, but what I would really like to see is more enforcement and stiffer penalties for drunken driving. Too many of these jerks have 5, 6, 7 and more drunk driving offenses, and keep on driving. Having lost my beautiful 32-year-old sister-in-law, mother of 3 and pregnant with her 4th baby, to a drunk driver with 3 prior offenses, His penalty was 10 years in jail, but he was out in a lot less. My SIL's husband is without a mate for life and her children are without a mother, too young at the time to really even remember her much. Our entire family has suffered a huge loss because of the misuse of alcohol. I get just nuts when I hear of some other drunk with multiple offenses continuing to drive - legally - and see some bartender who doesn't cut people off and get them a cab when it is obvious they have had way too much.
I have mixed feelings on this subject.

I lost my father to emphysema so this subject is very touchy to me.  I HATE cigarettes with a passion.  On one side, I think it is great that they are going to control what tobacco companies put in their cigarettes.  My mom and I have said for years that all the crap they put in tobacco is just ridiculous.  Surely there is a way they can "clean up" their cigarettes so to speak.  I can't help but wonder how many years my dad lost in his life due to his cigarette smoking.  I remember vividly how many times he tried to quit and just couldn't do it.  The man literally smoked until one day he couldn't breathe and my mom called 911.  My dad was rushed to the hospital.  He had started to turn bluish gray.  He lived 4 days after that.  He never came home and that was 2 years ago.

However, I agree that...what is next...alcohol....fast food...etc.  There are a lot of alcohol related illnesses and there are also a lot of illnesses related to being overweight.  Then we have the people on illegal drugs, etc.  I'm tired of government involvement in every little thing and yet at the same time I can't be unhappy with this whole tobacco thing.  Call me a hypocrit if you will, but cigarettes have cost me 2 grandpas, 1 uncle, and a dad.  I'd be happy if cigarettes were gone totally but that is just me.

I've got mixed feelings, too, Democrat.

I've never walked in their boots, and I can't imagine what it must be like to wonder if every single next step you take might be your last, especially if a soldier is completely worn out, physically, mentally and emotionally because he or she is forced to do multiple tours.

I can't imagine what it might be like to see one or more of your buddies killed by a group of people who don't abide by the rules of war.  I can't imagine how long I'd be in a position like that before I would simply snap and go beserk.

These young people must be stretched beyond any human limit, and although I don't condone it or agree with it, at the same time, there's no way in my heart that I can condemn them.

The military can punish them all they want.  But if these young Iraqi War soldiers are anything like the Vietnam War veterans I personally know, I can promise you that there is no prison more painful and punitive than their own personal prisons that their minds, hearts, bodies and souls inhabit.

We don't know for sure that these soldiers weren't following orders.  They have a commander-in-chief who favors torture, so anything is possible.  Deep in my heart, I feel these soldiers are just being used scapegoats to protect those in the highest of command who gave the orders they followed.

I constantly condemn this war and the lies and liars that led to it, but I find it impossible to feel any ill feelings towards these soldiers for actions that may very well have been orders they were obeying from higher-ups.  I also can't condemn them if they just *snapped.*  A human being can only take so much, and I believe these poor soldiers have been stretched way beyond what most humans could endure.

you got Bush mixed up with Bill Clinton...it was....(sm)
all Clinton's cronies who ended up on Wall Street, FM/FM, etc., in charge, who were still there when everything tanked.....Clinton's cronies have profited, not Bush's
Mixed feelings - Bills speech was excellent.
To be honest I didn't watch her speech - refused to. I didn't feel like listening to her talk about me, me, me and how she feels she really won. So - in all fairness I don't know whether it was a good speech or not. What I have read about her speech is that someone said she said the party needs to be united and support Barack. I read another article that said she didn't do anything to unite the party. And I read another article that said Hillary's speech was a blow to the campaign and because of it Baracks ratings have dropped. I read all of this on the drudge page and I do believe there are both liberals and conservatives there, but I could be wrong. In honesty I can't tell you what I thought of it, and I think my hatred for her really is not fair to her but it does make me biased against anything she has to say.

On the other hand - I thought I hated Bill Clinton more than I did her and I was planning to refuse to listen to his speech tonight, however, found myself to curious so I did listen. Once he got past the praising Hillary & his presidency (which he didn't do as much as I thought he would) I actually thought his speech was very good. Well thought out and I thoroughly enjoyed it and my opinion of him has definitely changed (we just won't tell my mother-in-law - think she'd have a seizure- ha ha ha).

Bill Clinton for the first time finally came out backing Barack and listed the reasons why we need Barack as president, and why he is the right choice. He was sincere, intelligent, and I actually enjoyed his speech.

I have heard that Bill Clinton has planned that he is not going to be there tomorrow when Barack walks out to give his acceptance speech he is going to leave (I guess a protest that Hillary didn't get picked), but after his speech tonight I wonder if that was just a rumor. Time will tell.

I still think he was a horrible horrible present for 8 years (one of the worst presidents in history), but tonight he showed a different side to him and I give him credit for that.
no, not wrong thread j- mssg mixed on 2 threads
she said she didn't believe in same-sex marriages - there has to be something sacred left in this country. I responded " boo...hisss" - she then ripped me at the top calling me an old hag for asking who descended from the heavens to give her the last word on what is sacred..............whew.........
Yes, right, because all of the women who
have abortions are simply sluts who can't keep their legs closed. Nobody has an abortion because they were raped and victims of a horrible abuse.

I'm not for abortion but I don't have to be pro-life to see the ignorance in your post.
Both are very beautiful women. nm
    x
Right back at ya! Come over here where women....
are not dissed by their party. Our door is always open! :)
    No, I don't hate women....
....and I don't necessarily hate dems, either. Hate is too strong of a word, and not worth the effort.

But I sure do dislike a bunch of women, and most of the ones I dislike happen to be democrats, who want to be taken care of by the social democrat party.

So much for your women libbers and feminists. I never could quite understand how feminists could be dems, as they sure don't want to be taken care of by men. Then why would they let the government try to take complete control over their lives. Explain that one for me, please. I just shake my head at you all, I really do.

And by the way, do you have some crystal ball that you know exactly why McCain chose Palin to be his running mate? I sincerely doubt any women will come running over to his side to vote, but you can sure bet he shored up his conservative base, which I believe was his intention. And it's going to work, too.

Obama/Biden don't stand a chance. Just wait and watch.

We will....and so will a lot of women out there in America...
who identify with her. THere is a reason Obama said to leave her alone.
    embarassment to women?
I'm a woman and not embarassed, that would be your opinion. There were plenty of more qualified democratic candidates also but look who we got, Barack Obama.
Sure, most all women who believe in murdering
    @
Seriously. Why do you suppose women
The onus of birth control is not gender specific. My own son learned this lesson when he was 9 years old when his only cousin was diagnosed with HIV. He takes precautions and asks the right questions. He does not have sex with women who are not willing to show him the pill or discuss openly with him how they would respond to an unwanted pregnancy...and he makes his own views plainly known in no uncertain terms...that he does not feel he is ready for the responsibilities of fatherhood and that he ALSO has the right to make this decision without moral persecution.

Most women share the news of a pregnancy with the father in the hopes that he will take on the responsibilities of fatherhood. The ones who do not more than likely already know what the answer will be. Unwanted pregnancies have a way isolating the mother, blaming her for having gotten pregnant in the first place in much the same way you have inferred in your parting shot (as though the father has suddenly become canceled out of the equation) and giving all sorts of folks license to condemn and weigh in on the decision. In the event that support is forthcoming, most women WILL have the child more often than not.
What about the thousands of men and women
who lost their lives in that "mistake" that Bush made.  Maybe that should be in that post too.  I bet their families feel like they had plenty of courage.
So, it's okay with you for women to not receive....
equal wages for equal work.  Maybe you would be okay with us just going back to the stick at home and support your man theory.  Maybe we shouldn't think for ourselves.  Why don't you come to the rescue for Obama, or anyone else for that matter?  She is a politician by choice, and we all know the scrutiny and criticism that comes with that.  I don't plan on treating her with kid gloves just because she has a vagina.  You, on the other hand seem to have a double standard, and that double standard does not help with the cause for equality for women.
So are you saying that all women should be pro-choice or
they are an insult to women as a whole?
They are not children. They are grown women.
It's their choice.  Can you say with certainty that if one of them or both of them came to George Bush and said I am joining the Marines he would talk them out of it?  I just don't see it that way.  At any rate, again, they have a mind of their own.
I agree. Women will have them - legal or not

Although I don't think I would ever consider abortion personally and am also sickened by people who have them over and over again (get your tubes tied darn it!!!), I believe women will have them regardless of if they are legal or not, so I think it is much safer if they remain legal.

I also think the woman should have the choice of what to do with something that is actually inside of her body.  She is the one ultimately 100% responsible for the medical bills due to the pregnancy, the emotional toll and physical risks of the pregnancy, and the child's well being afterwards.  The man can get off scott free if he wants and skip from job to job to avoid paying child support, so it should definitely be up to the woman.

I also find it odd that many pro-life Republicans are so adamant that each baby have a chance to be born, but yet if that baby is born to a lower-class mother many (not all) don't want a dime of their money to go to help that baby with healthcare costs or any other costs that could help the child after it's actually born.  Where is the deep concern for the children that are actually living?

Though the thought of abortion is definitely disturbing to me, I do not believe at less than 3 months old a baby's nerves are developed enough to feel pain as they are aborted, but I know for a fact many children in the USA are being abused and neglected on a daily basis because they were unwanted, and my heart breaks for them.  There are over 100,000 foster kids in the USA right now that need good homes and more resources, and I think our focus should be on helping these children first.  My sister has 2 amazing foster kids, and I really wish the anti-abortion activists would focus on fostering or helping the kids that are here now instead of focusing so much on fetuses that are inside of other women's bodies, and therefore really none of their business in my personal opinion.  (I know some do foster and volunteer, but I have a sneaking suspicion that not all of them do!)

Where women are little more than breeding stock???
If some women were a little more discerning about who they slept with and a little more careful about taking precautions, we would not have to fix 2000+ "oopses" in a day. So go right ahead...fund irresponsibility, infanticide, and baby killing. Knock yourself out. Make planned parenthood richer. don't you think there is something sick about making a profit from killing babies??
Like women who are resistant to every form of BC
Before you start preaching to me about adoption, been there, done that. Easy for you to say from your ivory tower pulpit. Try it once of twice, like I did, and then come back and tell us all how right it is for "everyone concerned." Blinded to your own gender by right-wing dogma. Not exactly the perfect example to follow. Stay out of other people's business unless you know what you are talking about.
Women who "do" ABs or adoptions do NOT
None of us need spend a single second defending ourselves against this santimonious slop. Take it back to the church where it belongs and remember the Sermon on the Mount while you are at it...judge not, lest ye be judged.
You have a lot of nerve assuming these women
    xoxoxo
Not according to what the public is saying out there...women are upset...sm
Palin is the complete opposite of Hillary being pro-Choice. Hillary voters are not voting for just any woman...go to other sites and read for yourself...

McCain's desperation is out in the open now and his judgement is in question.
The Dems only stand up for dem women....
the rest of us, unfortunately, are fair game, especially in election season.
I've had too many women bosses that were like
knowingly VOTE ONE INTO OFFICE as U.S. Vice-President. It would be more palatable have a root canal with no anesthetic.
You don't think there are strong, intelligent women...
who express their opinions in favor of Palin?

The conservative posters on this board are no more sensitive about Palin than the other side is about Obama.

It is not personal for me either. I'm sure Obama is a nice person...and I am personally sure he is not the right man for the #1 job. He has a socialist agenda and socialist policies and I think that would be disastrous for America. That in a nutshell is my problem with him.
Some liberal dem women are = most cruel to their own sex ....sm
than any people I've ever known in my life.

Not all liberal women, mind you, just some.

Women of Alaska - another view.

    Definitely worth the watch

Well, there are liberal women in Alaska....
no kiddin! Geez. They borrowed the signs from the lower 48; heck, they may BE from the lower 48. Did anybody really think there were not liberal Democratic women in Alaska? This is news?
If men checking out women's butts ....
means they are not qualified to be President...take out the whole male race. Sheesh.

And you could have been a little less crude in your description.

Being led by his anatomy didn't seem to bother Clinton's ability to govern. Multiple affairs including one in the white house, but many Democrats think he was the second coming.

If Slick Willie could do it, I have no problem believing McCain could.

JFK had affairs. RFK had affairs. Why don't we just go down a tick list? Where was all the righteous indignation then?

You mean the other women who dare to present
    Americans are not a monolith.
Good for her, they could use some women's rights over there.
    xx
More pregnant women should be informed of this.
When I had my son, we donated his cord blood and it was all done for free. When I had my daughter four years later (and at a different hospital), we were told that we could store the cord blood, but not donate, and of course, storing means paying (way too much), so we didn't do it then. I probably should have done more checking around to see where we could have donated.

That one, I'm all for - if they could use that to find a cure for or treat cancer, MD, or anything else, imagine how fabulous that would be!!!
Why don't women have a right to choose suicide?
Why is it a woman can chose to murder an unborn child because it's "her body" - a scientific impossibility...

But if that woman decided to kill HERSELF - when it actually IS her body - it's a crime.

You promote abortion. The fact that you don't want to admit it proves that somewhere in your dank, shriveled-up little soul, there's at least one ounce of decency that knows what you're professing is wrong.

You are pro-abortion. You're just in denial about it. LIke every other "proud Liberal" lunatic.
Yes, many of them hire good-looking women
    nm
Each candidate has to have a

minimum of 15% in the opinion polls to be invited to participate in the presidential debate.  That is why it is usually just the republican nominee and democratic nominee.  I don't know that I agree with this, but if you actually look at ALL the candidates....you have so many parties who nominate a runner and most of the time you don't even hear about them.  We have Ron Paul, Bob Barr, Barry Obama, McCain and that doesn't include the green party, etc.  If they just automatically included all of them in the debate......we wouldn't get anywhere.
