I know Bahrain is not Dubai but there are considerable similarities. The Dubai you describe is much like the Little London we had in Bahrain with a country club, a couple of pools, golf courses, houseboys, gardeners (how weird), Indian men to do whatever you wanted from babysitting to waxing your hardwood floors. However, outside of that little enclave was the real, the ugly, the disease-infested (half my kids were out of school with hepatitis at one time or another), rocky, sandy, barely habitable Arab Emirate, the one where women had a separate entrance into their homes from the men, where men kept European women on yachts and in apartments for their pleasure until they tired of them, where the Europeans (white people) were invited to the Sheikh's private yacht/beach but the Bahraini people were banned...sort of like the south used to be...whites only type of thing. I grant you that there were a lot of people who lived there who thought this type of living was just peachy but I thought it was atrocious. I hated every minute I was there.
