references to Islamist/Islamism on Google. As when you are researching a medical term, you have to check a number of references in order to arrive at the correct answer.
Islamism is fundamentalist, that is true. It is also the political (as opposed to personal and private) application of Islam. i.e., the desire to overthrow secular law and be governed by Sharia law.
There are moderate to strict Christians. Then there are fundamentalist Christians who, by definition, are strict and govern every aspect of their lives by strict adherence to their interpretation the bible and/or the founding documents of their particular sect.
Are there organized factions of Christianity who advocate death to nonbelievers, forced conversion, violent overthrow of government and mandatory political application of religious principles to secular life? I really have not heard of any, but if they existed they would not be referred to as merely Christian or even fundamentalist Christian. Wouldn't they be referred to by another term such as *Christianist*?
Ditto, There are moderate to strict Muslims who practice Islam, with varying degrees of tolerance for other religions. There are fundamentalist Muslims, and then there are Islamists, to whom there is no distinction between religious and secular life, and who are the political, violent, nutjob wing of Islam.
