I wasn't going to be the first to mention the 800-pound gorilla in the room (Israel) and its endless need to prove it can defend itself against every illusory foe (and its endless need to have us foot the bill).

What's really frightening about Israel--well, aside from its policy of genocide--and labeling any criticism of its policies as antisemitic--is its nuclear policy. Here is a middle eastern country that developed its nuclear capability in secret, with an avowed purpose of destroying all its enemies. I mean, here we have exactly what we fear is happening in Iran. The missiles may not be aimed at us, but they're aimed. I can't imagine a way to peace in the middle east that doesn't take their nuclear capability into account, but that also takes into account that everyone *knows* about it, and that every country around is going to be tempted to defend itself, as you'd expect a sovereign nation to do.
