I would say it's more of the same..(sm)

We've been getting threats for years from them (like the ones that were ignored before 9-11).  The only difference now is the amount of publicity they get.  I think they are just shoring up the anti-American sentiment and (seemingly successfully) adding to American fears.  I would imagine they would also like to see Obama's response, but they (as well as Russia) really need to get a grip on that one president at a time thing.

And no, this is not to say these threats should not be taken seriously, but we do need to understand that this is common practice for them.
