I am no fan of government control of anything. We now have a government that is tromping all over our lives, deciding how much of our money it will compel us to give up and how much it will permit us to keep. Then it gives the benefit of that hard work to others who did not earn it. But the government cannot exercise the same degree of control when it comes to how those people spend the money?
Sometimes on a state level, sometimes on a national level, there are proposals (some of which are enacted) to police diet by means of special taxes on fast foods, candy, soft drinks, etc. Vending machines are removed from schools *for the good of the children.* Government is always trying to save people from themselves. These ideas are presented as being of benefit to society in general, to prevent of diet-related disease and control healthcare costs, help kids learn in school, etc. Some of this reasoning is even sound, but I do not support proposals to legislate what people voluntarily buy with their own money. Government should butt out.
But when it comes to how the recipients spend money I am compelled to fork over, the government would be wrong to intervene? Why? Because that would be discriminatory toward the dietarily challenged? When they stop making me pay up, I’ll stop caring what people eat on my dime.
