As the election quickly approaches, the U.S. bishops are shining a harsh spotlight on one bill: the Freedom of Choice Act, commonly called FOCA. FOCA is again before Congress; its chief sponsor in the Senate is Barbara Boxer and one of its co-sponsors is presidential candidate Barack Obama.
In July 2007, Obama told a Planned Parenthood audience: “The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act.” Search YouTube.com for the words “Obama” and “FOCA” to hear it for yourself. Since Obama has said that signing FOCA into law would be his first priority as a new president, summarizing the bill answers the question: For what change does Barack Obama have the audacity to hope?
The U.S. bishops’ summary of FOCA points out:
• It creates a “fundamental right” to abortion throughout the nine months of pregnancy. No governmental body at any level would be able to “deny or interfere with” this right, or to “discriminate” against the exercise of this right “in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information.” For the first time, abortion would become an entitlement the government must condone and promote.
• Some states require that women be told about the risks of abortion. FOCA would erase all informed-consent laws states have enacted.
• Many states require that parents be informed and sign off on their daughters’ abortions, just as they are informed and involved in every other surgical procedure. FOCA would override and end all parental-involvement laws.
• Some states have laws promoting maternal health. Obama’s FOCA wouldn’t allow them.
• Regulation on abortion “clinics” helps keep these businesses responding to health and safety concerns. FOCA would end these regulations.
• FOCA would disallow “government programs and facilities that pay for or promote childbirth and other health care without subsidizing abortion,” say the U.S. bishops.
• Conscience-protection laws would end. These currently allow Catholic and other pro-life hospitals, doctors, medical students and health-care workers to opt out of participating in abortion in many places.
• After FOCA, any laws that prohibit a particular abortion procedure, such as partial-birth abortion, will no longer be in force.
• FOCA would also strike laws requiring that abortions only be performed by a licensed physician.

In a Sept. 19 letter to members of Congress, Cardinal Justin Rigali, chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, raised the bishops’ concerns about any possible consideration of FOCA.
“Despite its deceptive title, FOCA would deprive the American people in all 50 states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry,” wrote Cardinal Rigali. It would also “counteract any and all sincere efforts by government to reduce abortions in our country.”

Remember Lee Iacocca, the man who rescued Chrysler Corporation from its death throes? He's now 82 years old and has a new book, 'Where Have All The Leaders Gone?'.
'Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the helll is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder! We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, 'Stay the course.'
Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the dammed, 'Titanic'. I'll give you a sound bite: 'Throw all the bums out!'
You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore.
The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq , the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving 'pom-poms' instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of the 'America' my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?
I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged. This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have. The Biggest 'C' is Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C's of leadership, with crisis being the first.)
Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It's easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory. Or send someone else's kids off to war when you've never seen a battlefield yourself. It's another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.
On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A helll of a mess, so here's where we stand.
We're immersed in a bloody war with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving.
We're running the biggest deficit in the history of the country.
We're losing the manufacturing edge to Asia, while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs.
Gas prices are skyrocketing, and nobody in power has a coherent energy policy. Our schools are in trouble.
Our borders are like sieves.
The middle class is being squeezed every which way.
These are times that cry out for leadership.
But when you look around, you've got to ask: 'Where have all the leaders gone?' Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.
Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo?
We've spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.
Name me one leader who emerged from the crisis of Hurricane Katrina. Congress has yet to spend a single day evaluating the response to the hurricane or demanding accountability for the decisions that were made in the crucial hours after the storm.
Everyone's hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping it doesn't happen again. Now, that's just crazy. Storms happen. Deal with it. Make a plan. Figure out what you're going to do the next time.
Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when 'The Big Three' referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, what are we going to do about it?
Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debit, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry.
I have news for the gang in Congress. We didn't elect you to sit on your assses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don't you guys show some spine for a change?
Had Enough? Hey, I'm not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I'm trying to light a fire. I'm speaking out because I have hope - I believe in America. In my lifetime, I've had the privilege of living through some of America 's greatest moments. I've also experienced some of our worst crises: The 'Great Depression,' 'World War II,' the 'Korean War,' the 'Kennedy Assassination,' the 'Vietnam War,' the 1970's oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years culminating with 9/11.
If I've learned one thing, it's this: 'You don't get anywhere by standing on the sidelines waiting for somebody else to take action. Whether it's building a better car or building a better future for our children, we all have a role to play. That's the challenge I'm raising in this book. It's a "Call to Action" for people who, like me, believe in America'. It's not too late, but it's getting pretty close. So let's shake off the crap and go to work. Let's tell 'em all we've had 'enough'

Well............maybe they will then be able to afford a car so they can drive themselves out of the path of a hurricane.....and get a better education so they can get a better job and the mentally ill that make up the biggest portion of our homeless (because Reagan closed all the mental institutions on the premise it was against their civil rights to keep them hospitalized) may not have to live in cardboard boxes anymore.

While stumping for the support of his party’s leftist base, Obama proclaimed, "we can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times . . . and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK."

A bill he has sponsored in the U.S. Senate, the so-called Global Poverty Act
(S. 2433), would raise the amount of American tax dollars allocated to United Nations’ redistribution efforts to $845 billion.

CAN MUSLIMS BE GOOD AMERICANS?
This is very interesting and we all need to read it
from start to Finish and send it on to anyone who will read it. Maybe this is why our American Muslims are so quiet and not speaking out about any atrocities. Can a good Muslim be a good American?
This question was forwarded to a friend who worked in Saudi Arabia for 20 years. The following is his reply:
Theologically - no. . . . Because his allegiance is
to Allah, The moon God of Arabia
Religiously - no. . . Because no other religion is
accepted by His Allah except Islam (Quran, 2:256)(Koran)
Scripturally - no. . . Because his allegiance is to
the five Pillars of Islam and the Quran.
Geographically - no . Because his allegiance is to
Mecca , to which he turns in prayer five times a day.
Socially - no. . . Because his allegiance to Islam
forbids him to make friends with Christians or Jews ..
Politically - no. . . Because he must submit to the
mullahs (spiritual leaders), who teach annihilation of
Israel and destruction of America , the great Satan.
Domestically - no. . . Because he is instructed to
marry four Women and beat and scourge his wife when she
disobeys him (Quran 4:34)
Intellectually - no. . Because he cannot accept the
American Constitution since it is based on Biblical
principles and he believes the Bible to be corrupt.
Philosophically - no. . . Because Islam, Muhammad,
and the Quran does not allow freedom of religion and
expression. Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist. Every
Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocratic.
Spiritually - no. . . Because when we declare
'one nation under God,' the Christian's God is
loving and kind, while Allah is NEVER referred to as
Heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in The
Quran's 99 excellent names.
Therefore, after much study and deliberation....
Perhaps we should be very suspicious of ALL MUSLIMS
in this country. - - - They obviously cannot be both
'good' Muslims and good Americans.
Call it what you wish it's still the truth. You
had better believe it. The more who understand this, the
better it will be for our country and our future. The
religious war is bigger than we know or understand. .. ....
And Barack Hussein Obama, a Muslim, wants to be our
President? You have GOT to be kidding! Wake up America !

sworn in on the Quran---not a Bible!

Clearly, Obama campaigned for someone who is corrupt, ruthless and has financial ties to terrorists. More importantly, Obama campaigned for a candidate who had the stated objective of dismantling US & Kenyan government efforts to root out AL Queda and other terrorist organizations. Organizations that had already caused the deaths of hundreds of Americans and Africans in embassy bombings. Senator Obama’s actions—intentional or not—were in direct conflict with the efforts and interests of US national security. I think this raises serious questions about the judgment, maturity and readiness of Senator Obama.

Wright and started going to Trinity United Church of Christ and he helped me on another journey and introduced me to someone named Jesus Christ. And I learned that my sins could be redeemed. I learned that those things that I was too weak to accomplish myself, maybe he could accomplish them for me if I placed my trust in him. And I learned that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when they believe in him and they come together and are guided by him." And yet another quote from Obama...."And then I've got to give a special shout out to my Pastor. The guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me. He's a friend and a great leader not just in Chicago but all across the country, so please everybody give an extraordinary welcome to my pastor Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Jr., Trinity United Church of Christ." First of all, for all you people screaming about Sarah Palin being a nut job Christian and praying for our country......what do you have to say about Obama and finding Jesus Christ? Talk about a double standard there. Furthermore, this goes to show that Obama was close to Rev. Wright and his claim that he had no idea about Wright's views are just untrue. You cannot attend a church for 20 years and seek counsel from a man and not know what that man stands for.....pure hatred and racism. Barrack Obama also refused to denounce Rev. Wright stating that he could no sooner denounce a family member. However, as Rev. Wright continued to spew out hatred from his mouth.....in Obama's best political interest...he threw his mentor and pastor of 20 years under the bus to try and save his career.
These are just three associations of Barrack Obama. This doesn't include Rezko and the monies given to Obama's campaign and the help he received in buying his house at a substantial lower price. This doesn't include Obama's association with ACORN and the fact that Obama himself trained ACORN members in Chicago.

Deal with it. The man will be in the White House four years, and hopefully, eight altogether. Were people busy focusing on holding GWB accountable even if he had an excuse for a fart? Did you want to know why he farted? No. He did whatever he wanted to, and now this country has to pay for it with the trillions of dollars deficit. Cmon people get real. So many people are in denial of being racist, and make all kinds of excuses when they are accused. So many people don't realize it. Don't look at the stereotypes portrayed on the tube. Its just entertainment folks, as evidenced by President Obama and other smart individuals.

President Obama is a man
who wants to sit down and civilly discuss things without preconditions. Now either he is lying about converting to Christianity and that doesn't bode well for Americans if he sides with the Islamic extremists OR they want him dead too for switching his faith in which case there will be no discussing of anything with those people. So where does that leave us? If Obama converted after being raised Muslim, he should know better than anyone the rule for converting.
So either Obama will turn on us and side with the Muslims or the extremists will do all in their power to try and kill our president for being an infidel. Either way.....how is this good for the US.

-- hit the ground running. Just got done watching TV to see what his first day was like. Just for fun, I looked up Bush's first day in 2001. Here's what I found:

Yeah, that whack-job started whacking way at women's control over their own bodies, tried to integrate government and the church (HUGE mistake!), and to outlaw one of the most promising medical breakthroughs. I'm surprised witch-trials and book-burning didn't come back into fashion again under his "leadership".
I think where he belongs is in some isolated, authoritarian religious cult out in the middle of nowhere.

Does what President Obama said today about companies going offshore have anything to do with what is happening to our jobs? I am confused. Does this just have to do with losing tax money or losing jobs?

During the electrion primaries and now with President Obama
we hear so much about creating jobs for Americans. The unemployment rate is at an all time high, and yet no one seems to say anything about jobs being lost to India. Isn't there something being done by the politicians who so wanted our votes to protect American jobs? This is criminal. I know if I was a business owner I truly could not find it within myself to betray this country and cause Americans to be jobless. I am honestly reaching for answers.

showing his true colors immediately. We are rapidly becoming the socialist states of america. Those of you who voted for him....I don't think you are going to like where the road leads. Even some Dems now trying to put on the brakes. Too late...the train has left the station. Unless of course you intend to join those at the bottom of the ladder and wait for your freebies. Problem is...when all of we worker bees are forced to the bottom of the ladder and all the "rich" move off to another country...who is going to be working to pay the taxes for the freebies? THAT is what socialism does. It is the great separator. The only people in the country who have anything left are those attached to the government. The new "rich." No middle class, poof, gone. OMG, I hope my post didn't look like I thought Obama did it
I know he didn't. He's a very decent person and respectful and when something is wrong he'll say so (and will have words with his people if they cross the line). I wasn't sure who did it. The news said they were going to tell us who is responsible but they never did (go figure). I just think its a horrible thing to happen to anyone and DH and I were talking tonight about when did all the nasty things like this start happening. I'm sure 100 or so years ago it wasn't bad like this. I just think it's a horrible world when someone is running for an office and people think its okay to do this. How low will they go?
