Lynch's daughter arrested at UNH on alcohol charges
DURHAM — The daughter of New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch was arrested on the University of New Hampshire campus Friday on two alcohol-related charges, according to university police.
Jacqueline R. Lynch, 19, a sophomore at the university, and another student, Adam Fenino, 19, of Canton, Mass., were arrested at midnight Friday on the sidewalk along Edgewood Road outside Congreve Hall, a student dormitory, police said. The two face charges of unlawfully possessing alcohol and having an open container. Both charges are violations.
University of New Hampshire Deputy Police Chief Paul Dean said police arrested the two without incident and they were very cooperative.
Lynch, of 166 Hopkins Green Road in Hopkinton, and Fenino, of 41 Farm Street in Canton, Mass., were released on personal recognizance.
Like all arrests involving students, Dean said the police department will follow its own policy and notify Lynch's parents by letter about the arrest.
The governor already knew about the arrest, according to the governor's office.
Gov. Lynch and Dr. Susan Lynch take this very seriously and intend to deal with it as a family, said Pamela Walsh, the governor's spokesperson, on Friday.
Arrests involving UNH students are not uncommon. Since Sept. 9, 91 of the 158 arrests in Durham involved UNH student in this academic year alone.
University spokesperson Kim Billings said for first-time alcohol offenses, the university is always in contact with parents. She said Jacqueline Lynch will be brought in to meet with the academic dean to discuss what happened and reiterate the standards of the university.
Billings reiterated Lynch will not be treated differently than any other student.
Lynch's arraignment will be Oct. 13 at Durham District Court.
The arrest comes one day after an alcohol-abuse prevention organization, Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol-Free, announced Dr. Susan Lynch, the state's first lady, will join other state officials on Wednesday, Sept. 21, to launch New Hampshire's State Strategy to Reduce Underage Alcohol Problems, a program to reduce underage drinking.
