I consider it showing terrorists that the US will not stand for Americans being beheaded and tortured at the hands of jihad extremists. I guess you never watched the news clip of the Haliburton (I think he was) employee being beheaded. I did. It was not a pretty sight all, and it was apparent that the beheading was not the first torture that he had received.

If there is no recrimination for terrorist acts against the US, they will continue. Is that what you want? Do you honestly think Obama can go and talk with these people without preconditions as he wants to? They know no other kind of lifestyle. They have been fighting for centuries, even millineums, and they are not about to stop now. They hate the US and they would go on unchecked terrorist attacks against us if there were no recriminations in place.

Of course, on the other hand, they are all probably so anxious to get to their 70 virgins that they don't really care whether they are captured alive or not.
