You don't have one iota of a clue what I've been through in my life. So, your trying to portray me as some mean spirited soul who doesn't have a clue what tough times are is very presumptious of you. I have walked some very difficult roads. I could write a book about what has happened to me that was not my fault, but I dealt with it. I received help and was grateful, and once I had a leg up I took it from there. I never once complained about what the government wasn't doing for me.
I'm not saying that the situation in Lebanon is easy or fair. However, at some point people have to take the consequences of their choices and live with them and not criticize the help they are given. If these people weren't whining while being evacuated from their country on a luxury cruisde ship with all the amenties I would have kept my mouth shut, but the audacity of people to complain about THEIR RESCUERS goes beyond being ungrateful. Now, if I was standing on a corner telling a mentally challenged homeless person to suck it up and get a job then your sermons would have been called for, but these are people who went to Lebanon with the money out of their pocket knowing full well the dangers there. I really can't believe you are comparing the dangers of Beirut, Lebanon to any American city, but then again I don't choose to walk through the worst neighbohoods in my city at night either. Anyway, there is no comparison.

There are just so many bad things and questions surrounding the war itself. When you add Bush's contempt for our troops, his cockiness and that smirk, it's a wonder that ALL he got thrown in his face was a shoe.
In fact, he was interviewed after the "shoe" attack. A portion of it is copied and pasted below. He used the same old "al Qaeda in Iraq" excuse, and when it was pointed out that al Qaeda wasn't IN Iraq until WE got there, his answer was, "So what?"

There is a reason - Canadians encourage healthy lifestyles, price cigarettes so high, they are unaffordable and provide preventative medicince. My GF had prostate cancer in 1955 and lives 30 more years under the Canadian health care system. My other GF had severe atherosclerosis at 65, lived for 20 more years. I could go on and on. Those with good insurance in the states have no idea what it is like to be underinsured or uninsured. Being in a national health care system is better than both, as a catastrophic illness bankrupts the patient. So, the taxpayer bails them out through bankruptcy. You're physician is a selfish doctor who probably is more a businessman than a healthcare provider. You know, the kind that would not provide medical care unless he were paid.

Do you hear yourself? You are regurgitating more propaganda from US media sources, which act as mouthpieces of the US, AIPAC, and Israel policies. Do you understand how one-sided US news coverage really is? The only smuggling of any significance going on is between Gaza and Egypt and, for the most part, the contraband is food, clothing, medicine, fuel and cash, which they have been cut off from for the past 18 months due to Israel's blockade. If there is weapon smuggling, the majority of it would be coming from the Muslim Brotherhood who is not exactly able to engage in such activities openly since they are repressed by the Egyptian government and are not even allowed to run for office as a legitimate political party, are subjected to mass arrests, etc.
The Brotherhood is a Sunni organization and does not even operate in Iran, whose relations with Egypt are pretty icy, to say the least. These factors make high-level, successful arms smuggling connected to Iran difficult at best and fairly unlikely. It should come as no surprise that Iran is entirely supportive of Palestine, but the way US depicts the relationship between Iran and other Islamic political parties is highly exaggerated and often inaccurate.
In any case, the weapons that have been able to be smuggled in quite OBVIOUSLY do not measure up to the caliber of weapons Israel has been able to amass with US financial backing and direct arms provisions. Take a long look at the list I put in the other post. Israel is able to conduct its wars FROM OUTER SPACE.
If Hamas had such weaponry, we would not have a 125:1 fatality ratio between the two sides, would we now? I hate to break this to you, but Iranians DO NOT imbed themselves in Gaza. You really need to educate yourself on the difference between an Arab and a Persian, when and how they support each other and where they draw their lines.
BTW, no place in any of my posts have you seen me say I think Hamas is "so great." In fact, I support secular social democratic parties in the Middle East, including Iran. I simply view the area's politics from a different standpoint than most Americans because I have had occasion to live there, to work with refugees, to marry into a Moslem family and to befriend man Iranians, Iraqis Jordanians, Syrians, Turks, Lebanese, Palestinians and even a couple of liberal Israelis over the last 40 years.

Last year, when a raging wildfire was two miles on the other side of our small town here in Montana, our local sheriff's dept from 60 miles away, came at 2 a.m. to knock on our door and give us a mandatory evacuation.
We chose to stay and hunker down, as you mention. The fire could have roared through here during the night, and my husband and I would have been goners. But that was our choice, at the time, and no one else could make that choice for us, or help us any more than they had. We stayed for the entire month, until it was out, as we chose to.
Part of the problem seems to be your local government and local media. You should think and do for you and your family what needs to be done, what you feel needs to be done. You shouldn't take it out on the people on this board, if they do not understand exactly what you mean.
And if you're so upset by media blitz on the election coverage, you should take it up with your local govt once things calm down after the storm, and tell them how neglected you feel during all of this. They are the ones that should be helping you, and are not.
And please be safe. Even though you think the conservatives on this board could care less, that's the furthest thing from the truth. You must do what you need to do. And getting angry at people here, doesn't help your situation, and takes away from what you ability to make decisions to help your family, right there where you are. This board isn't what's important. You and your family are.

I just saw a story on Headline News Network about the shoe-throwing incident, and they said the people of Iraq are divided on how they feel about it, but nobody feels it was wrong, half of them think it was the right thing to do and half think it was an embarrassment but not necessarily the wrong thing to do.
so if they feel that way, let's bring our precious sons and daughters home, and never go back. Our finances are in crisis, we can't afford to be spending billions where we're not wanted. What's the point of being there and spending all this money we could be using in much better ways. Why keep risking the lives of our troops for people who don't appreciate it at all? I'm no political genius, far from it, but plain old common sense says this is just wrong!

This information has been up on his website since the day he announced his candidacy. Selective hearing does not make a convincing argument. The tax increase is aimed at INDIVIDUAL incomes in excess of $250,000. The tax cut applies to the rest of us. Hello….He can do both. What part of MTs are middle class workers do you not get? No he is not talking out of both sides of his mouth. He wants to reverse Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy. Basically, this would reset status quo back to the day before those tax cuts went into effect. I "get around it" with the truth. Like the OP below pointed out, Obama cannot create more social programs without the majority support of Congress. That's the way democracy works. He is simply trying to restore funding for longstanding program commitments that has been stripped, diverted or discontinued over the Bush years to fund the war. Read his platform. Examine his voting record. There is no inconsistency between the two. The only one around here who is being "run" is you…by smear tactics. He is not wishy-washy either. He is not ashamed of being able to broker compromise, and that is exactly what this country needs to break this deadly gridlock in Congress. Don't you care anything about making an informed choice?

At church last week our preacher had just gotten up to preach and he had just told us to turn to a Bible verse. So we all looked down to turn to the verse and when we looked up he was gone. Apparently he had stepped through the side door to go get a drink of water. Of course he came back out two minutes later, but someone made the joke that the rapture had come and he was the only one taken. It was pretty funny. Of course if it had really happened we'd have all of been with him (well hopefully, as I'm sure you know there are people in church who aren't really Christians!)

There are just some very strange people in this country who think nothing of putting themselves on youtube giving their opinions (no matter what the subject). In today's world I would never ever put my face out for all to see stating my opinion. On this board is one thing (and even then I'm always concerned about what I post and who is watching it), but sometimes it's best to keep ones feelings to oneselves, especially if it is negative. The thought police are out there and you just never know what will come back at you for the worst.
I haven't seen her lately
When the election was going on (still when Hillary was running against Obama) and even shortly after the primaries ended I really enjoyed her. I thought she was level headed and brought out some good discussions and issues, but then towards the end of the election (maybe a couple weeks before 11/4) I found her starting to become opinionated and she jumped down someones throat about something that I thought she was clearly wrong on. She just became irritating and got under my skin a bit. I also really used to like Keith Olberman, but his coverage of the election was so unfair and between Keith and Rachel I just found them opinionated and not reporting facts and stuff so I kind of lost interest. Maybe I should try watching them again. It's funny about Hannity and Colmes. I cannot stand Hannity. He's just too uppity and goody two shoes and even D Morris would tell him stop focusing on certain issues and report on the other important ones and he doesn't listen. He annoys the you know what out of me. But Colmes...this guy is a crack up. I used to not be able to stand him. Now I enjoy listening to him. I don't agree with a lot of what he says, but I'll listen. I can take him a lot more than the others because he doesn't gloat about the O winning whereas the others do.
So I'll have to catch her show again and see if she's gotten better. Thanks for reminding me about her.

Just to take the first point: How about a speech he gave in 2008 which he criticized the US because most of us speak one measly language, while Europeans often speak 2 or 3? There is actually a pretty good reason for that, by the way. A person could drive in Europe a distance equal to the trip from Cincinnati to Chicago and pass through several countries. Some countries even have several dialects. Many European countries are tiny. Being multilingual in Europe is very practical. America is huge and people a couple of thousand miles away can understand one another in a single language, from youse guys to y'all.
I don't remember ever hearing a US president or presidential candidate publicly criticize his country the way this one has (well, maybe Kerry). And of course our foreign critics simply lap it up. I think Michelle Obama has some foreign language skills, but I've got to wonder in what second and third languages Barack himself is fluent. Surely he must be.....

good god i wish we had it like France. Not sure what Canadians you are talking to but the ones i've seen are afraid to come to the US because of our health care system, "what if" an accident occurs in the US? and just maybe we DO need a waiting period for certain things. I know plenty of people that run to the doctor for every little thing. Maybe if they give their bodies a chance to heal itself instead of expecting to get antibiotics every time we might have less cases of MRSA. it's what drives up the cost of insurance and health care in general

I would imagine it is $250,000 on the bottom line profit since that is what we all pay taxes on. I agree that a business with a gross income of $250,000 is not all that much, as a rule of thumb, probably $125,000 net. On the other hand if it is $250,000 NET that's a pretty darn good income and I say they could well afford to pay a few measly dollars so those making a net of say $25,000 could have a little relief. But the middle or lower class workers are going to get NO relief because the big businesses are going to protect their greed and the small businesses have to raise their prices to survive. Example: We ate at a family owned restaurant the other night. Sirloin steak was $17.95 the last time we ate there was $21.95. The owner posted a sign apologizing for the price increases but said he didn't have any choice if he was going to stay in business because of his wholesale prices going up. THANKS Bush and big oil.
