We've swung far to the right and now far to the left. It will be a good thing if the true majority of Americans re-take control of their government, and I think you'll begin to see that happening in the 2010 Congressional election cycle. With any luck, Obama will be a one-term President unless he can manage to once again hoodwink the American voters into believing he's a moderate. Can we be fooled twice? I hope not. Let's get a true moderate into the White House in 2012 - of either party, I don't care which.

As I've said elsewhere, moderates of both parties agree on many of the important things that need to be done, needing only to have folks in government who will sit down together in good faith and hammer out the compromises needed to get them done and who will work on OUR behalf instead of their own.
The system in Washington has, over the years, become a festering sewer of entrenched power and self-interest - on BOTH sides of the aisle. It must be cleaned out, disinfected and set back on the right path, or we will only go down in history as yet another nation that held the fire of promise in our hands but could not keep it.
The only solution, as I see it, is to send new representatives to Congress. We must ship the current residents of Washington back home to find real jobs and perhaps to re-learn (if they ever knew) what it really means to live as ordinary citizens and the daily struggle with the realities of life that the "common man" who has no special privileges must deal with.
The place where this happens is in the PRIMARY elections wherever an incumbent of either party is challenged by others in their own party. I can quite understand that Democrats will want to send a new Democrat to Congress, and the same for Republicans - and that is FINE, so long as the following conditions prevail:
1. No incumbent is returned to office, period. If this means that we must throw out a few "good" people, so be it. All of them - even the best - are infected with this corruption and believe that Washington "works a certain way".
2. The new people we send must be moderate in their views, meaning that we must believe that they are not "party zealots", who believe that only their party has the answers. We must believe that these are people of good sense, good will, and a deep interest in finding solutions that Americans of similar mind can support.
3. (Here's the hard part!). IF we believe that "our" party is not providing us with candidates that meet the qualifications in #2, we MUST be willing to support the candidate of the other party if that candidate does meet the conditions. In other words, we must tell Washington that it is not PARTY that matters most, but CHARACTER, COMMON SENSE, and the ability to REASON TOGETHER.
If all of this were to happen, we will have mounted the most peaceful revolution against a corrupt, oppressive government that has ever occurred in human history. It would transform this nation and it would break the backs of the political parties' power over us. Today, the decisions about our fate are being made in smoky back rooms, by way of sly agreements. We can change this if we ourselves can first shake off the fear and hatred of the "other" party that the rulers in Washington have so carefully instilled in us while we were looking the other way.

Because, no matter what, any misstep Palin makes will be magnified a thousand fold by the left wing, then mocked on SNL, then replayed ad infinitum on Leno and by the harpies on The View and by "I've-got-a-crush-on-Obama" Letterman.

My stance is that life begins in full at the moment of conception. Why? Because cell division begins at that point and body organs and systems begin forming very shortly thereafter. It is quite an amazing process, really. At 5 weeks, the neural tube has formed. At 6 weeks, the heart bulge has begun to form as well as the jaws and the buds that will become arms and legs. At 7 weeks, we have eyelids and elbows and fingers. At 8 weeks, we have a brain and hands and knees. At 9 weeks, earlobes appear as well as shoulders. At 10 weeks, the fetus is fully recognizable as a baby and at 11 weeks bones have begun to form. At 16 weeks, your baby has started to grow toenails. And on and on it goes that this living viable BABY grows. Can an inanimate lifeless object do that? Can your computer monitor grow fingers? Do the cells of your car multiply? No. A baby is something that is living and growing from the moment of conception and to take its life is murder and robs it of its civil rights as a human being.
That is how wrong abortion is.

I was just wondering if you feel like with the economy the way it is that American workers will begin to take any job that is offered to them and that will make it harder for illegals to find work and therefore they will go home?
I just thought about it. A lot of the jobs that the illegal people have now are jobs that Americans really do not want to do. Well, it is beginning to look like if people want to eat, they are going to have to do whatever they can and may decide that those jobs are not so bad after all.

Where do I begin about Palin flaws?
Lately I really hate how she is inflaming the crowds and trying to paint Barack as a terrorist. That's just plain wrong. I hate that she lies. I hate that she abused power. I hate that she could put our country and security at risk by having a high power. I hate that she is against abortion. I hate that she is against educating kids on sex issues, I hate that she is so backwards, I hate her 1980s blush, I hate her voice, I hate that her husband belongs to a fringe group trying to get Alaska to secede from teh union. I hate that she went to teh fundraiser with her husband for getting alaska to secede from the union. I hate that we are supposed to think she is worthy of Hillary supporters when all they have in common is a vagina. I hate the way she won't be interviewed. I hate the way she lowers herself to only go on Fox or talk to Rush and I cannot believe that repubs don't see the blunders of these moves. I hate that people say "she is a woman" as if that alone makes it progress even though she basically is not helping women at all. I hate that she left Wasilla with a pile of taxes and debt when she had gone in to a debt free town. I hate all the meth labs in her tiny town that nobody talks about. I hate how she pretends that only she and mccain supporters are patriotic. I hate how ...oh gosh... i can't talk about it anymore. I can't begin to imagine what the parents must feel.
I would be so enraged if I were in their position that I'm not sure what I'd do. I hope I would remember that keeping my family together and supporting my child (or children if there are siblings) has to be a priority, but on the other hand, to know that this monster is free to walk the streets and do this to other children... I'm not sure I wouldn't do whatever was necessary to put him either behind bars or underground. I certainly couldn't condemn a parent in that situation who made that choice.
I really hope there is enough uproar over this to change things. Otherwise, what choice do people have to protect their children but to take the law into their own hands? These judges (and legislators, for that matter) need to realize that, like guards in a prison, government rules by consent of the governed. Fail to protect the governed or to enforce reasonable laws in a just manner, and the governed will assume control one way or another. I am not an anarchist by any means, but law and order is one of the most basic governmental responsibilities. We can argue til the cows come home about everything else we would or wouldn't like the government involved in, but if they fail on too large a scale in this most basic duty, vigilantism and anarchy become inevitable.

Going forward not but a few years, Social Security is a grave problem, but Medicare is a true crisis, and we won't be able to tax our way out of either, although the idiots will try.
These things ARE coming:
1. Tax increases. These will be of many different varieties, and from all levels of government.
2. Reduced SS benefits. This might be disguised in the form of raising the eligibility age, etc., but it will still be a reduction in benefits.
3. Healthcare rationing. We simply will not be able to pay the bill to provide everyone with the level of care that medical science is technically capable of delivering. Rationing will be done in two ways - by restricting access on some sort of a cost-benefit basis (if you're 80, you won't get that triple bypass), and by increasing the waiting times while forcing people to go through a series of less-effective but cheaper forms of treatment.
I continue to be amazed at the number of people - in government and out - who continue to stick their heads in the sand over these realities while we pile up debts that even China can't bail us out of.

The Libertarian Party has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr, the Constitution Party has nominated pastor and radio talk show host Chuck Baldwin, and the Green Party has nominated former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Ralph Nader declined to seek the Green Party nomination and is running as an independent candidate. That is in addition to the Ron Paul fans as well as McCain and Obama.
What did we get out of the debate last night? That same ole crap Obama and McCain have been throwing around since the get go. Imagine what that would be like with all these other people thrown in the debate as well.

I am one of the organizers of a Tea Party in my city. The little people cannot do anything to the politicians, and true, this may not amount to much, but if it makes even ONE elected official take notice then the purpose has been served.
Perhaps if more people got out and did something rather than laughing about this, we ALL could make a difference. But then that is just my opinion.

The current administration calls itself conservative, but they definitely do not represent my beliefs. I believe in freedom, peace, and prosperity, rights for everyone, and bias towards no one, and have the deepest respect for the Constitution. Except for a few individuals, none of that exists with Democrats or Republicans. I do mean the politicians, not the people.
Free market capitalism produces long-term growth. Socialism and middle-way economic interventionism by the state produce poverty and bureaucracy. If the goal is to keep poor people poor generation after generation you should promote socialism.
What we currently have is a plutocracy. America is one big giant corporation, and the very affluent do control our political process. Those who are honest call them fascists.

You will never get everyone to agree with you, and until everyone is willing to go to the middle (which will never happen), we can forget the having no parties deal. There is considerable reason for ardent supporters of both parties to be increasingly concerned about the direction the country is being taken (shoved!) by the Obama-Pelosi-Reid troika, which has already shown that it is far more radical in its liberal agenda, in its contempt for states' rights, its palpable fear of conservatives, and in its "globalism" than many Democrats can stomach. The pendulum has swung too far, and now it threatens to come off its hinge entirely. It must be swung back toward the middle before it is too late.
Can it ever become too late? History says "yes" - and the tipping point can be reached with astonishing speed and little warning. I never cease to be amazed that so many Americans seem to be so ignorant of history that they have no real appreciation of how little it takes to destroy even the mightiest of nations, or how many seem to believe that "something" would never let this happen to America. They cannot imagine a world in which there is no America or, what is more likely, an America that becomes an extension of the socioeconomically incompetent system of "government uber alles" that now literally stinks up Europe.
Here's a very disturbing oxymoron about the "troika" that the mainstream press has not bothered to look into: Given that the world is quite obviously becoming more dangerous rather than less so, and given an administration that believes so strongly that big government spending is the solution to the current recession with massive increases to almost every government agency, how is it that the Department of Defense is the only skeleton at the feast? With extraordinary ineptitude, the day after North Korea defied the world and launched its intercontinental ballistic missile, the Obama administration announced defense cuts, including the missile defense program - which has shown that it works.
Now we have a grave situation developing with respect to illegal immigration. Not only are the labor unions beginning to collude with the illegals, but the number of "anchor babies" born in the US to illegals has nearly doubled from 2.7 million per year in 2003 to over 4 million in 2008. Is there anyone on this forum who understands what is happening here?
I know that Americans of most political persuasions, including independents, are becoming very alarmed, as well they should. What concerns me now is that we might already be past the tipping point. We must restore two-party government to Washington in 2010, or I believe there will be no turning back from this calamitous course.
Turnout for tea parties is pathetic!
I just saw coverage of some of the Mad Hatter's tea parties, and the turnout is pathetic. I also don't see any government agents harassing the crowds, as some paranoid posters here claimed they would. Much ado about nothing!

All this controversy over the number in attendance af last week's tea parties, and who was there! I would think over a quarter-million participants would rank right up there as far as demonstration statistics go.
There was another demonstration in 1995 which planned to attact a million demonstators. Wikipedia has this:

Even back then, folks were hollering 'recount,' I don't recall seeing any female or white faces in that crowd, either. I think that was pretty sexist and racist. The point is, you hang with like-minded individuals. Nobody put out the 'whites only' sign at the tea parties. It was equal opportunity, and if you were a hard-working black business owner you might have been there.
