It is gratifying to know that there are still good school systems and good students and good teachers out there when we hear so much negative about them today. I wish our school system were the same. We have a very small independent school system (less that 600 students PreK-12) and in the last week alone, we have had at least separate 2 incidents of fighting between st least 4 different students. I don't mean a push or shove....I mean out-and-out, down-in-the-dirt, hair-pulling, fist-punching fighting. Every day, my son comes home and tells me of altercations and he was even called into the principal's office yesterday to "testify" to what he saw transpire on the bus one afternoon between a couple of girls who had an ongoing squabble that carried over from lunch the same day. It is a very sad state of affairs, so much so that our school has hired a police office to be the school's "chief of police" and monitor the behavior of students while in school. Our school buses have cameras on them to record what is going on and our school halls have cameras in them as well. I realize that this may not be unusual for a bigger school with problems with gangs and drugs and fighting, etc., but we are, or were, a small sleepy town where violence such as this was never a problem in past years.
Oh, how I do go on. I posted all this just to say that you should be proud of your local school system and the caliber of teachers they have that produce this kind of student. And WAY TO GO on becoming involved in your local schools, whether or not you have a student who attends there.
