Help Us Send Bibles to the Victims of Hurricane Katrina!

Faith-Based Response

Freehold, Iowa - Landover Baptist Church members have been glued to their television sets for the last few weeks, watching survivors of God's powerful hurricane (named Katrina by secular meteorologists) try to make sense of their ravaged lives. When you live in an area of the world God despises, and He gets ready to blow it off the map, you'd best duck low or high tail it out of town, says Pastor Deacon Fred. The Bible teaches us that when it comes to wiping out sinners, God has a history of having some pretty bad aim. This time I understand He knocked down a few church steeples and even took some good Christian folks back home with Him to Jesus. 

What saddens members of the Landover Baptist community the most however, is that the unsaved world is hell-bent on doling out artificial optimism to the victims of God's latest attack.  They are providing food, money, gasoline, and shelter, says Pastor Deacon Fred. These are temporary gifts that give these poor lost people a false hope!  The only real hope comes from the Word of God!  The Holy Bible! These folks need to get fed and sheltered on the Word of God.  We daresn't open our doors to the homeless, because we know it never gets at the real source of their problem, and we always end up with dirty floors. 

How are the lost of Katrina going to understand why God did this to them if they don't have a Bible to read? says Pastor Deacon Fred. How are they ever going to be able to prevent it from happening to them again, if they are not able to study the Word of God?  Through the Bible, history teaches us that God has serious issues with large cities that condone prostitution, abortion, homosexuality, mixing of the races, sexual promiscuity, drunkenness, idol worship, practicing false religions (voodoo), and loud pulsing music. Some of them folks in New Orleans, were luckier than Lot's wife though - they stayed behind even though they received the message to get out, and God spared their lives.

It is understandable that the survivors of God's hurricane are confused, starving, homeless, and distraught - but as True Christians™ we know without a doubt in our hearts, that giving them food and shelter is not going to solve the biggest and only real problem in their lives. In fact, it will turn them into beggars and make their misery even worse.  The issue that caused their condition is not an earthly condition at all.  We know that it is an eternal condition, and there is only one sweet balm to soothe a lost soul who has no respect for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.   And that is getting a Holy Bible KJV 1611 into their hands. From what I've seen of these survivors, I doubt many of them know how to read, so we will be sending Bibles on tape for them as well, says Pastor Deacon Fred. They can play the Bible tapes on the boom boxes it looks like they made it a priority to salvage or loot.  

Landover Baptist's effort to assist in providing Bibles to victims of Hurricane Katrina is known as a, faith-based response. It is our heartfelt hope that some worthwhile people might be saved from a destruction much more powerful than God's hurricanes - for they are but a precursor to what is really going to happen on that great and glorious day when He finally gets so ticked-off He just blows up the whole world.

In the midst of administering chest compressions to a dying woman several days after Hurricane Katrina struck, Dr. Mark N. Perlmutter was ordered to stop by a federal official because he wasn't registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

I begged him to let me continue, said Perlmutter, who left his home and practice as an orthopedic surgeon in Pennsylvania to come to Louisiana and volunteer to care for hurricane victims. People were dying, and I was the only doctor on the tarmac (at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport) where scores of nonresponsive patients lay on stretchers. Two patients died in front of me.

I showed him (the U.S. Coast Guard official in charge) my medical credentials. I had tried to get through to FEMA for 12 hours the day before and finally gave up. I asked him to let me stay until I was replaced by another doctor, but he refused. He said he was afraid of being sued. I informed him about the Good Samaritan laws and asked him if he was willing to let people die so the government wouldn't be sued, but he would not back down. I had to leave.

FEMA issued a formal response to Perlmutter's story, acknowledging that the agency does not use voluntary physicians.

We have a cadre of physicians of our own, FEMA spokesman Kim Pease said Thursday. They are the National Disaster Medical Team. ... The voluntary doctor was not a credentialed FEMA physician and, thus, was subject to law enforcement rules in a disaster area.

A Coast Guard spokesman said he was looking into the incident but was not able to confirm it.

Perlmutter, Dr. Clark Gerhart and medical student Alison Torrens flew into Baton Rouge on a private jet loaned by a Pennsylvania businessman several days after Katrina hit. They brought medicine and supplies with them. They stayed the first night in Baton Rouge and persuaded an Army Blackhawk helicopter pilot to fly them into New Orleans the next day.

I was going to make it happen, the orthopedic surgeon said. I was at Ground Zero too, and I had to lie to get in there.

At the triage area in the New Orleans airport, Perlmutter was successful in getting FEMA to accept the insulin and morphine he had brought. The pharmacist told us they were completely out of insulin and our donation would save numerous lives. Still, I felt we were the most-valuable resource, and we were sent away.

Gerhart said the scene they confronted at the airport was one of hundreds of people lying on the ground, many soaked in their own urine and feces, some coding (dying) before our eyes. FEMA workers initially seemed glad for help and asked Gerhart to work inside the terminal and Perlmutter to work out on the tarmac. They were told only a single obstetrician had been on call at the site for the past 24 hours.

Then, the Coast Guard official informed the group that he could not credential them or guarantee tort coverage and that they should return to Baton Rouge. That shocked me, that those would be his concerns in a time of emergency, Gerhart said.

Transported back to Baton Rouge, Perlmutter's frustrated group went to state health officials who finally got them certified -- a simple process that took only a few seconds.

I found numerous other doctors in Baton Rouge waiting to be assigned and others who were sent away, and there was no shortage of need, he said.

Perlmutter spent some time at the Department of Health and Hospital's operational center at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries before moving to the makeshift Kmart Hospital doctors established at an abandoned store to care for patients. After organizing an orthopedics room and setting up ventilators there, Perlmutter went back to the Swaggart Center and then to the LSU Pete Maravich Assembly Center's field hospital to care for patients being flown in from the New Orleans area.

We saw elderly patients who had been off their medicine for days, diabetics without insulin going into shock, uncontrolled hypertension, patients with psychosis and other mental disorders, lots of diarrhea, dehydration and things you would expect. I slept on a patient cot there every night until I came home.

Gerhart said he felt the experience overall was successful and rewarding, although frustrating at times. You don't expect catastrophes to be well organized. A lot of people, both private citizens and government officials, were working very hard.

Perlmutter did not return home empty-handed. He brought a family of four evacuees back with him and is still working with Baton Rouge volunteer Hollis Barry to facilitate the relocation of additional hurricane victims to Pennsylvania.

He also returned with a sense of outrage. I have been trying to call Sen. Arlen Specter (of Pennsylvania) to let him know of our experience.

I have been going to Ecuador and Mexico (on medical missions) for 14 years. I was at ground zero. I've seen hundreds of people die. This was different because we knew the hurricane was coming. FEMA showed up late and then rejected help for the sake of organization. They put form before function, and people died.

Both FEMA and the Coast Guard operate under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which has been widely criticized for its disjointed, slow response to the devastation caused by Katrina. Federal officials are urging medical personnel who want to volunteer to help with disaster relief to contact the Medical Reserve Corps or the American Red Cross for registration, training and organization.

New Mexico, Arizona Declare Border Emergencies to Fight Crime

What a shame that these two governors had to declare states of emergency simply because we have at president who knows that this problem exists but just doesn’t care enough about preventing another 9/11 to do anything about it.

New Mexico, Arizona Declare Border Emergencies to Fight Crime

Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- New Mexico and Arizona governors declared states of emergency for their borders with Mexico, pledging to increase funding to stop the rise in drug smuggling and violence by illegal immigrants.

New Mexico's Bill Richardson and Arizona's Janet Napolitano blamed a lack of money from the federal government that has left the borders and their residents unprotected by U.S. patrols.

``Governor Richardson was asked to take this action by local law enforcement and ranch families.'' Billy Sparks, Richardson's chief of staff, said in a phone interview today.

The declarations were made Friday by Richardson, 47, and yesterday by Napolitano, 47. Richardson, who has been named a possible 2008 presidential candidate, said in a press release there has been ``total inaction and lack of resources from the federal government.''

The escalation in violence during the past month, including gunshots fired at Columbus, New Mexico, police chief Clare May, the attempted kidnapping of three girls and the deaths of 100 cattle along New Mexico's 180-mile border with Mexico prompted Richardson to declare the emergency, Sparks said.

The declaration makes $750,000 of state funding available in affected counties. Richardson pledged to make an additional $1 million available. The money will be used to increase local law enforcement, open a new homeland security office in the border region and help build a fence to protect livestock near Columbus.

Fences, Neighbors

Unlike some border areas in the U.S., landowners in New Mexico maintain their own fences to keep illegal immigrants off their property. In one case a landowner's entire fence was stolen, Sparks said. The U.S. Border Patrol has 109 workers for 200 miles from El Paso, Texas, across New Mexico to Arizona, said Sparks. That is expected to increase by 75 in October.

Napolitano's order makes $1.5 million available to fight crime along the border, according to her press release.

``I intend to take every action feasible to stem the tide of criminal behavior on the Arizona side of the border,'' she said.

The number of unauthorized immigrants entering the U.S. each year rose to more than 700,000 in 2004 from 140,000 in the 1980s, according to the Arizona declaration.

Questions about the security of the U.S. border with Mexico have risen since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as officials have tried to limit movement into the U.S. of potential terrorists along with the illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. Immigration restrictions have forced more illegal crossings over landowner- built fences in Arizona and New Mexico.

The border emergency declarations were reported earlier today by the New York Times.

Numbers Jump

So far in the fiscal year that began in October, agents in the Yuma, Arizona, sector of the U.S. border patrol have captured 122,344 illegal immigrants, said Michael Gramley, spokesman for the sector. The previous record was 108,000 in 2000. The Yuma sector covers 126 miles of border in Arizona and California.

``We're taking greater strides toward reaching a higher level of border security,'' said Gramley, in a phone interview. ``The border patrol values any assistance that we receive from state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies.''

Federal officials said they have been making progress in increasing border security.

``Extraordinary progress has been made over the last couple of years as far as strengthening our borders,'' said Jarrod Agen, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He declined to comment on the state of emergency in Arizona and New Mexico. ``It's the authority of the governors there.''

Both governors called on authorities in Mexico to increase security on their sides of the border, the press releases said.

Mexico's Response

Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement yesterday that it had agreed after meeting with Napolitano to support her actions and work to reduce crime on its side of the border. The ministry blamed organized crime for the border problems.

``On that side and on this side there's organized crime,'' Mexican President Vicente Fox said in an interview with reporters during a visit to the northern border state of Sonora yesterday. ``On that side and this side there's drug consumption. The question is how do all the drugs that cross over there reach the consumer markets? What's being done on that side?''

Texas Governor Rick Perry, 55 doesn't plan to declare an emergency because he believes protecting the U.S. border is the federal government's responsibility, said Robert Black, Perry's spokesman, in a phone interview. Texas's 1,200-mile border with Mexico is the longest of any U.S. state with a foreign country.

``The governor had said that you can't have homeland security without the federal government,'' said Black. ``The feds can't avoid their responsibility to the states.''

'Book of Virtues' Author Says Hypothetical Remark Was Valid

- After pondering on his radio program how aborting every black infant in America would affect crime rates, best-selling author and self-styled Values Czar Bill Bennett is vehemently denying he is a racist and defending his willingness to speak publicly about race and crime.

On the Wednesday edition of his radio show, Bill Bennett's Morning in America, syndicated by Salem Radio Network, a caller raised the theory that Social Security is in danger of becoming insolvent because legalized abortion has reduced the number of tax-paying citizens. Bennett said economic arguments should never be employed in discussions of moral issues.

If it were your sole purpose to reduce crime, Bennett said, You could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down.

That would be an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down, he added.

Outrage From Democrats

Bennett was secretary of education for President Ronald Reagan and is considered one of the Republican Party's big brains. But this week Democrats and some Republicans seemed to also question if Bennett's mouth is of size as well.

Democrats expressed outrage, ranging from demands for an apology to requests that the Federal Communications Commission suspend Bennett's show.

Republicans, Democrats and all Americans of good will should denounce this statement, should distance themselves from Mr. Bennett, said Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., D-Ill. And the private sector should not support Mr. Bennett's radio show or his comments on the air.

I'm not even going to comment on something that disgusting, said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. Really, I'm thinking of my black grandchild and I'm going to hold (off).

'Things That People Are Thinking'

In an interview with ABC News, Bennett said that anyone who knows him knows he isn't racist. He said he was merely extrapolating from the best-selling book Freakonomics, which posits the hypothesis that falling crimes rates are related to increased abortion rates decades ago. It would have worked for, you know, single-parent moms; it would have worked for male babies, black babies, Bennett said. So why immediately bring up race when discussing crime rates? There was a lot of discussion about race and crime in New Orleans, Bennett said. There was discussion – a lot of it wrong – but nevertheless, media jumping on stories about looting and shooting and gangs and roving gangs and so on.

There's no question this is on our minds, Bennett said. What I do on our show is talk about things that people are thinking … we don't hesitate to talk about things that are touchy.

Bennett said, I'm sorry if people are hurt, I really am. But we can't say this is an area of American life (and) public policy that we're not allowed to talk about – race and crime.

Robert George, an African-American, Republican editorial writer for the New York Post, agrees that Bennett's comments were not meant as racist. But he worries they feed into stereotypes of Republicans as insensitive. His overall point about not making broad sociological claims and so forth, that was a legitimate point, George said. But it seems to me someone with Bennett's intelligence … should know better the impact of his words and sort of thinking these things through before he speaks.

The blunt-spoken Bennett has ruffled feathers before, most recently in 2003 for revelations that despite his best-selling books about virtue and values, he is a high-rolling preferred customer at Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos.

In light of accusations that the Bush administration should have been more sensitive to black victims of Hurricane Katrina, a Republican official told ABC News that Bennett's comments were probably as poorly timed as they were politically incorrect.

Conservatives Helped This Happen

As terrible as it is, this attack could be miniscule if,  in fact, God
continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies  of  America  to
give us probably what we deserve. The ACLU's got to take a lot  of the
blame for this…The abortionists have got to bear some of the burden for
this because God will not be mocked…I really believe that  the pagans,
and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays  and the
lesbians…all of them who have tried to secularize America,  I point the
finger in their face and say, 'you helped this happen.'

Who can forget Jerry Falwell's infamous post-9/11 indictment of
America?  'You helped this happen,' Falwell said to the majority of
Americans,  who disagree with him on a majority of issues.

Now, a conservative group called Columbia Christians for Life has
proclaimed that Hurricane Katrina was another one of God's punishments,
  citing as evidence the supposed resemblance between the hurricane's 
image on a weather map, and a fetus.

Trying to refute such claims from these zealots is truly an exercise in
futility. But searching for explanations after a disaster of Katrina's 
magnitude is not. And if you do in fact search for those explanations, 
you'll reach an unavoidable conclusion:

Hurricane Katrina may have been an act of God. But the level of death 
and destruction it caused was not. That was an act of conservatism.

It is conservative policies that made this natural disaster unnaturally
  catastrophic. I say to conservatives, you have blood on your hands 
today. I point the finger in your face and say, You helped this
happen.

Conservative policies have led to an increase in poverty across the
nation, especially in New Orleans, one of the poorest major cities  in
America. About 150,000 people in New Orleans lived below the poverty 
line before Katrina, 100,000 of them in abject poverty, making less 
than $8,000 a year. Their poverty left them with nowhere to go, and  no
means of escape, as the hurricane bore down on their homes.

Conservative policies have led to more global warming, which scientists
  agree has already begun producing more intense hurricanes and storms. 
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, a former Republican Party Chairman 
and longtime GOP operative, has seen his own state ravaged by Katrina. 
But he was vital in helping to convince the Bush administration to 
squash the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, and pushed Bush to go 
back on his campaign promise to regulate carbon dioxide. Governor
Barbour  would dare express grief over the deaths that he himself
enabled.

Conservative policies have led to a war in Iraq based on lies, and tax
cuts for the rich, both of which, we know for a fact, took money
directly away from vital hurricane preparedness work in New Orleans. 
On nine occasions in 2004 and 2005, The New Orleans Times-Picayune
specifically  cited the cost of the Iraq War as a reason for the
shortfall in hurricane-  and flood-control funds. The levees that gave
way under  Katrina's pressure were supposed to be upgraded with money
that ended  up in Halliburton’s coffers.

Conservative policies have also led to the National Guard's misuse and
abuse, leaving the Gulf Coast without the personnel and equipment 
vital to a recovery effort of this magnitude. More people will die  on
the Gulf Coast as they await their would-be saviors, who are in  Iraq,
victims themselves of conservative policies.

There can be no doubt that while Hurricane Katrina was not preventable,
  much of the death and destruction left in its wake was. I say to
conservatives,  you have blood on your hands today. I point the finger
in your face  and say, You helped this happen.

So you put it solely on the poor themselves? More people in this country are slipping into poverty every day - whole families of them, fathers included. That was a good thoughtful post and I thank you for writing it but hope you will take a moment to consider another side.

While throwing money at a problem is not guaranteed to fix it, one thing is for sure - throwing billions to the already obscenely rich is sure as heck not going to fix the root cause of any social disorder.

If we want to really get to the root cause of poverty in our society (which I agree is a good idea) we must not exclude the role that capitalism itself plays in not only producing a permanently disadvantaged underclass, but also in keeping it that way. A fair and impartial look at our laws and operating procedures is enough to convince anyone that things are just the way the movers and shakers want them to be. And, you are correct that only the very most motivated and exceptionally gifted will make it out of the morass. That's also the way it's supposed to be, father or no father. Social Darwinism - the cream rises.

Trouble is, we can't all be the cream. It's unreasonable to expect that of everyone. But this is the society that free market capitalism builds. It's going to get worse, too. The next step is a bonding of purpose between the corporate oligarchy and the government itself, and the next step after that is a military police state run by those who consider themselves the cream - in other words, just another banana republic, the very antithesis of what America should be.

Now I don't know about you but I don't think this is the direction America should take and I don't think for a minute it's the result of poor kids having no fathers. That may leave them more vulnerable and more easily manipulated, but it's hardly on their backs. Everyone who's not the cream is victimized in the kind of society that values money and power above everything else.

Right now there are billions upon billions of dollars being handed over not to the poor but to that handful of defense corporations powerful enough to rub elbows with Bush and his cronies. That is where America's money is going and that's where it's going to continue to go as long as we support a government that delights in making itself and its friends wealthy at the expense of everyone else in America.

Deregulation schemes ala John McCain, George Bush, and the Republican Party.

Doesn't that make you and your husband the least bit interested in trying to help change this dire economic situation by changing parties?

If McCain is elected, there is no doubt in my mind that this country will see another great depression, possibly worse than the one that began in 1929.

The liberal democrats in congress, lining their pockets with kickbacks from all the big financial institutions, and looking the other way, forcing the banks to take the no doc loans.

Obama and Biden taking bribes, and lining their pockets, and Bill Clinton sending all his old cronies to run FM/FM, with absolutely no financial background, to run it into the ground.

Pres. Bush had actually tried to help this situation a few years back, and guess what? Harry Reid and other dems blocked his attempts.

They now completely blame George Bush. Granted, perhaps some of the blame could lay with him, because he should have been powerful enough to get something like this done.

But he made a fatal error. He tried to reach across the aisle, and put dems in charge of certain committes, and such, and all they did was stab him in the back, and make him ineffectual. So much for the dems reaching across the aisle. Their sole purpose for the past two years has been in making Bush look bad. No one can deny it.

So look to your own party. It ain't pretty.

I havent blamed Obama.  I agree the McC camp has stirred up the heat a bit with the socialism, marxists and terrorists comments.  However, I feel that Obama is responsible for his supporters to a point and being that he is very influential over his following, he should be speaking out about peace and trying to let people know that racial bad behavior of any kind is not condoned.

HE is the one that has had his life threatened.  If anything, the McCain camp should be speaking out against this.  I agree with Keith Olberman.  McCain should have come out immediately against that volunteer of his with her bogus accusations of being attacked by a big black man.  Give me a break!  He has done nothing but put these fears into people that don't know any better, and I do hold him responsible for a lot of this.  In my eyes, he is nothing but evil.
