Who's going to explain to your son that Bush couldn't care less

what happens to him AFTER he gets home, God willing that he is fortunate enough to get home in one piece!

Full funding for veterans health care in the future – Senator Durbin supports permanent, mandatory funding for veterans health care. He believes that veterans health care is an earned benefit that shouldn’t be subject to political deal-making. To accomplish this, he has co-sponsored the Assured Funding for Veterans Health Care Act of 2005 which makes Veterans health a “must fund” item so that it not subject to the cuts and shortages of the annual discretionary budget process.

Responding to Administration Failure to Adequately Fund Veterans Health NowThe Bush Administration requested more than $80 Billion in supplemental funding for war related costs in 2005 but not one extra penny for veterans. Senator Durbin found this to be unacceptable and supported an amendment offered by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) to the 2005 Iraq supplemental spending bill to increase funding for veterans by $2 billion. The Murray amendment included a proposal by Senator Durbin to expand VA treatment capability for veterans suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder. The amendment was defeated, with Republican leaders and the Bush Administration arguing that closing the VA funding gap was not an emergency. Just weeks later, the VA admitted that it was indeed more than $1 Billion short of needed funds in the current year and would be short for the next year as well. Durbin joined Murray and others in responding with renewed legislation for added funds for the VA and this time the measure was passed.

Helping veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – Senator Durbin continues to push for additional VA funding and staff to help veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) officials at six of the seven VA facilities visited by the GAO said they might not be able to meet the demands for PTSD treatment of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Welcome Home G.I. Bill, increased health care, education and financial support for veterans – Senator Durbin introduced the “Welcome Home GI Bill” which, like the original G.I. Bill offered at the end of World War II, will provide a package of benefits for returning veterans to ease their transition to civilian life. This bill would provide up to five years of health coverage for veterans who have no other insurance, as well as $5,000 tax-free for a home down payment. It also roughly doubles current levels of veterans’ educational benefits to $75,000 over four years.

Protecting veterans from harsh new bankruptcy rules – Senator Durbin sponsored a successful amendment to exempt from the harsh “means test” of the new federal bankruptcy law those disabled veterans whose debts are incurred primarily while they were serving on active duty. This successful addition to the new law provides protection

Concurrent Receipt of Both Retirement and Disability Payments – Senator Durbin feels strongly that military retired pay should not be reduced because a military retiree is also eligible for veterans' disability compensation awarded for a service-connected disability. Currently, a retiree can only receive both benefits in full if he or she is 50% or more disabled. To improve this situation, Senator Durbin has co-sponsored the Retired Pay Restoration Act (S. 558) which allows the receipt of both military retired pay and veterans' disability compensation with respect to any service-connected disability.

Senator Durbin Works to Help the Families of
Fallen Service Members

Increased support for surviving spouses and children of fallen service members – With Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH), Senator Durbin is pushing for substantial increases in health, education and financial benefits for surviving spouses and children of service members who die serving our nation. Their bill, S. 21, calls for increasing the “death gratuity” from $12,500 to $100,000; increasing the monthly compensation for surviving spouses to $1,500 per month plus an additional $750 per month for each surviving child. It provides surviving children with no-cost health care until they are turn 21 (23 if they are in school). And it increases education benefits for children and spouses to $80,000 each. Senator Durbin has been adamant that the increased death gratuity should be paid to the families who lose loved ones due to either combat or non-combat deaths.

Military Retiree Survivor Benefit Equity Act of 2005 – Senator Durbin is a co-sponsor of this bill which allows the spouse of a retired military member who dies from a service connected disability to receive benefits from both Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) paid by the Veteran's Administration and the military in the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP). Currently the law forbids surviving families from receiving both benefits in full.

Wonder if this is her first trip

Mr. Obama's trip

I don’t have time to watch the news but I try to when I can.  Before Mr. Obama took the trip, they were talking a lot about Mr. McCain and how many trips he took.  I think it made Mr. Obama feel like he had to go there.  I remember Mr. McCain saw all those military people since he wants us to stay in Iraq.  Mr. Obama talks about diplomacy a lot so he met with all those leaders because he wants to stop the war.  I don’t understand why you are talking about Mrs. Obama.  The news people talk bad about her too.  She said she didn’t mean what some of those other people thought she said.  I don’t like to hear all the negative things.  They make everything more confusing.  I like to listen to the candidates tell who they are and what they would do if they are elected.  Mr. Obama talks about what he wants to do for the country on his web site and in his speeches.  I guess that advisor made a mistake but somebody corrected him.  I like the town hall meetings.  People get to ask questions there.  Thank your reply.

You guys are a trip...

Maybe I'll send him some money because I can't believe he's not spending more.  Oh maybe he's frugal...  Darn it!

Dear Mr. President (Barack or is it Barry):

CHEERS!!!

Sincerely,

A voter who is all for the CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!

O's trip to Riyadh

Did you see the gold necklace O got from King Abdullah?

Wow!  It is ver long and looks very heavy and it is at least 18k if not 24k.

The box alone is big as a table!

An appropriate gift for O !

Obamaramarama trip
Yeah, isn't that nice. I am glad we were asked to pay for this. I am not surprised. They are liars and they are the worst example of leadership this country has ever seen. What Americans are waiting for, I just don't know. They don't seem too concerned about Korea either. He will do what he did with the Pirates. After the Navy took over and cleaned up, he stepped up to the plate to act as if he was there all along; while he was actually mustering up his communist friends acceptance and friendship for his own hidden purposes. So much for his promises. I guess, NO HE CAN'T AND WON'T.
Did ya ever think it could be a school field trip?

Most high school kids don't get a chance to see a presidential until they are of voting age.

I don't put any faith in anything MSNBC writes or talks about. They are are for the O.

Obama's trip to Hawaii.
So you would have Obama take is chidren out of school in the middle of the week, fly them 4250 miles on a 10-hour plane trip for a jet-lagged 1 day sick bed visit with a bed-bound frail elder who was released from the hospital with a broken hip just 2 short months after they had spent quality time together on a private family vacation, when GM was probably looking a whole lot better than she does now? After that, you would have him turn right around the next day and take another 10-hour 4250 mile plane trip back home while trying to come up with answers about "what's wrong with grandma"?

There is a very strong possibilty that these children will have their lives changed forever next week should they become the nation's first family. They will be thrust into the bright glare of media scrutiny, pack up all their things, leave the only home they have ever known, say goodbye to all their friends and prepare to take off for DC in the middle of the holidays and move into the White House. Hopefully, they will not have to be greiving the loss of their grandmother in the middle of all that.

If these were my children, I would want to presevere the memory of the family vacation and protect them from premature greiving over the impending loss. I feel sorry for people who live in such a hateful frame of mind all the time that they could be so thoughtless as to not even consider what they might be doing with their own children in a similar circumstance.
Memo to Hillary: Road Trip!

Memo to Hillary: Road trip to that place between King City and Coalingo

Dear Hillary:

I know you've been real busy with sniper fire and 3:00 a.m. phone calls, etc., but have you ever seen that commercial for AT&T internet service, where the guy says he's on the road between "King City and Coalingo" (sp?) (There are several commercials out there for this product, and the theme for them is people's "moments.")

In the one I'm referring to, there's a guy is standing near a big field with a bunch of cows, explaining how his service lets him do business anywhere, and after he's through explaining how it works and how his bid was the first one in, he gets a text message and says, "It looks like I got the account."

An old man appears and says, "Congratulations on your moment."

Hillary, PLEASE drive yourself have your chauffeur drive you (with or without your cell phone) to that field "between King City and Coalingo" and take a L-O-N-G walk through that field. (Be sure to fill up have one of your servants fill your gas tank first.) Pet a cow or two. Resist the urge to whip out that gun yer granddaddy taught you how to shoot if you become hungry for a filet mignon; maybe you could make a have your maid make a PBJ before your departure (you know, the kind of food that more and more of us hard-working white people are forced to rely on in today's economy). Along the way, don't be afraid to step into the very thing that comprises your soul. Take a deep breath (lots of them). Try to place yourself into Barack Obama's shoes (sans cow dung) and explore WHY it is that YOU believe you must control everything -- even when you're the loser. Why is it that YOU think YOU get to dictate the terms of everything, even if you don't have the right to do so?

You have repeatedly said you're "in it to win it." You didn't win it. Now pretend to have some grace and/or just some personal decency and do NOT try to strong-arm the person who DID win it. There are a lot of women who would be good Vice Presidential candidates, all of whom believe in and would be loyal to President Obama, none of them potential orphan-makers.

Take a good, long look at those cows, Hillary. Maybe you'll learn a thing or two about "moments." Hopefully, you'll even learn a thing or two about yourself.

Edited by Moderator for aggressive and strange language.

Errr, that was a trip abroad, not a campaign.
Remember when McSame dared him to go and then it backfired because O came out of it smelling like a rose and McSame ended up with egg all over his face? He even made a lame attempt to compete with O that week for media coverage by meeting the Dalai Lama in the middle of the primaries. Last time I checked, the Chinese don't vote either.

Obama was able to casually win the Iraqi govt support for his troop withdrawal plan, looked very diplomatic in Israel when he assured them of continued US support and managed to attract over 200,000 folks in Berlin without batting an eye. See what happened when McSame let campaign bluster, bravado and underestimation of his opponent cloud his strategic judgment?

A red flag would go up for you if the bread on the left side of the toaster came up before the right. You'd have to go measure all the angles and consult the Gemetrial and Bible Code implication of it all.

About that writing on the wall? Probably just another visual hallucination. Pay it no mind. It's not real.
They forgot to mention what it was for & Afghanistan was part of the trip-a lot for 1 wk

Indeed, in a February 17 article, the ANSA English Media Service reported (accessed from the Nexis database): "Since arriving in Italy on Saturday, Pelosi has visited the American air base at Aviano in northeast Italy and the American military cemetery in Florence and is due at the NATO Joint Forces Command in Naples Wednesday." Further, a February 19 press release issued by Pelosi's office stated: "Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Congressional delegation today were briefed by U.S. Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, and Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples. Admiral Fitzgerald and his NATO staff provided information on NATO activities in the Balkans, the ongoing training of Iraqi Security Forces, and operations against pirates off the coast of Somalia." The release further stated: "On Saturday, Speaker Pelosi and the Congressional delegation visited Aviano Air Base where the Speaker pinned the Bronze Star Medal on Technical Sergeant Phoebus Lazaridis for extraordinary service in Afghanistan. The delegation paid their respects to the more than 4,400 American World War II soldiers buried at the Florence American Cemetery on the outskirts of Florence on Sunday."

On February 21, Pelosi released a statement about her trip to Afghanistan, in which she said, "For the past two days, I have led an eight Member House delegation to Afghanistan to visit U.S. troops," during which the delegation "met with U.S. military leaders, and the U.S. Diplomatic team in Kabul to better assess the best course of action to further our national security interests in preparation for the completion of President Obama's strategic review of the Afghanistan policy" and "met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who is sending his own advisors to Washington as part of the review process."

It was a campaign trip abroad, dear sm....plain and simple.
perhaps he accomplished what you say he did, in your eyes. But it was definitely a political trip. A global political trip, no doubt about it.

McCain is ancient history. I'm kinda glad he didn't get elected, as he's shown his true colors of late.

And your third paragraph? Nice try, dear.
Three months after birth of baby Trip, SP's daughter and boyfriend kaput!
Now did anyone see that coming or is that just something out of the blue? My goodness, would have never believed that. They really seemed like good heads on their shoulders, graduates, college bound, career-minded, responsible. Really shocking to me.

Nobody is questioning his patriotrism, but that's as far as it goes for me. I need someone who has a plan for the country. Who has the insight to see how far our country can go, the great things we can do as a nation.

While people may not know much about Barack one thing I do know is he has a plan and one that can be reached.

John McCain? He has no plan. Your absolutely correct. John McCain's platform is all about him and the time he spent as POW. At least Barack is making the election about us.

A lot of people may not know what Barack will bring (I do - a better future for us). Can you imagine what life would be like if we didn't do things because we didn't know what the outcome would be. A lot of our finest things have come because we took a chance on the unknown. We now have computers and other things, and we went to the moon and are exploring mars - all which was unknown years ago.

McCain - he will bring us war, no improvement in the economy, war, jobs continuing to go overseas, war, tax breaks for big companies and his wealthiest friends, war, continuing to rise food and gas prices, war, a rapidly rising deficit while we continue to send 1.8 billion dollars to Iraq (while they have a surplus), war, war, war, and more war. For those with children I think that would throw a huge red flag up. (and I don't mean the red, white and blue flag).

McCain had the right idea - he just picked the wrong token female to do it....bad judgement all the way around. There is just no justifying Palin for VP of an entire country let alone to an elderly man with cancer in his medical history.

Now we have her Hollywood smile that is as irritating as G. W.'s infamous constant smirk.  Not to mention "soccer mom" to go along with "when I was in prison."  and PULEZ!!!  spare me that "folksy stuff."  How intelligent people can say she won the debate is far beyond me. I would like to know on exactly which points she won. I didn't hear her give one single intelligent answer to a single intelligent question.  Heaven help us if she is one heart beat away from the presidency.  We think this country is in trouble now...........
You got that right. Couldn't say it better myself.

Thank you - couldn't have said it better
I get quite irate when I am told what I should or should not watch/read. I have a mind and I know what I feel is right from wrong. Let me think for myself. That's why I don't like a lot of the mainstream TV shows because they sit and give their opinions and then try and tell everyone that is the way they should think. The minute you try and stop certain groups from talking you take away their freedom of speech. Makes me want to shout out to them, how come you get to speak and I can't. They'll scream and shout if their viewpoint is held back but they'll hold back our viewpoints in a nannosecond.

I say let people use their own minds. Let them read and listen to everything. Then let them make up their own minds.

Knowledge is freedom!

'I guess if churches don't want government running them, then maybe they should stop trying to run government with their religion.'

Maybe if the churches didn't keep trying to 'dish it out', they wouldn't be in danger of having to 'take it'.

So you couldn't resist TWICE?

Couldn't find it.

All I could find on that board was complaining and whining about liberals and how they're all terrible and godless, etc., etc.  'Nuff said.

couldn't resist

We live in a time when comedians outdo pundits. Here's Jay Leno:

President Bush is expected to announce that he is now sending more troops to Iraq, despite the fact that his generals, his military analysts, members of Congress, and most of the American people are against the idea. The reason he is doing it? To give Iraq a government that responds to the will of the people.

I couldn't agree more! (SM)

How about Caroline Kennedy for his VP?  It's definitely feeling "Camelotty" these days.

Remember the last time a US President chose the chooser of his VP?  (Hint:  They call him "Darth Vader.")

I couldn't agree more.

In my family alone I have German, Irish, and Indian.  I'm your basic Heinz 57.  I don't go around saying I'm a German-Irish-Indian-American do I.  No....I'm an American.  I'm proud of my heritage, but I'm an American.....period.

When it comes to the idea of a black president.....I'm all for it.....if it is the right person and Obama is not.  I'm all for a woman president but Hillary most definitely is NOT the one.

Couldn't ask for a better mayor....
Ditto on the Katrina and Rita chapter. Mayor Bill is top of the line. Wish he could stay forever.

I lived out West before moving back in...the commute to see friends and family was too much for me. That area experienced some of the same evolution as Sharpstown did in terms of mixed populations of ethnic populations, but without the benefit of the Super Neighborhood designation, at least as far as I know. It really has made a difference and that was the point I was trying to drive home about the proactive, inclusive approach. That progressive attitude is another thing that makes me really proud call Houston my home.

You know, it's amazing how a REAL person, a woman no less, is on the ticket!

It's nice to see such a down-to-earth, likeable person be able to be on this ticket and not be part of the Washington machine.  Her husband has a blue collar job.  How many other candidates in recent history have been able to say that about their spouse?  She is a REAL woman, has a family with kids and gut instincts to boot.  I just think the whole idea of having a take-charge, no-nonsense state governor who knows how to use her noggin would be great for Washington and congress!

I couldn't agree more . . .
You and I are a minority on this board with this radical thinking, but I for one am ready for someone who honestly wants to do the right thing for the people -- not putting money into their cronies pockets!!!  It is beyond me that anyone after seeing the 2 debates in the last week would even consider voting for THAT TEAM!!  They scare me beyond anything that I have ever imagined!!  They are hate mongering, self-righteous, vicious, desperate dimwits who obviously have no clear-cut plan, but just mask their stupidity with hate-filled lies as a smokescreen for their ignorance.  The truly intelligent people in this country see through that bull!

The reason you couldn't get help now
Is because to many people are abusing the system.

I had a friend awhile back who was engaged with a baby on the way. Well, two months after the baby was born, her fiance up and left. Couldn't handle the responsibility of being a father. Anyways, he disappeared off the radar. Therefore, no child support (I'm sure you can all think of a few names to call him!) Anyways, she went to the welfare office to see if she could get some assistance. Now mind you she was still working full time, but at $10.00 an hour, she was making "too much".

The lady at the welfare office flat out told her because she was not a minority there is no way she would get assistance! I couldn't believe she said that!

Welfare was created for the single moms out there. Now the single moms can't even get it. Like I have said before, I have no problem giving to those who truly need it. Even with as little as I make I would still give anything I have to those less fortunate. But I will not give to those who won't do for themselves.

Where I live you see the abuse a lot. You see the government housing where one person has the house and they let everyone and their mom stay there rent free. Girls who have babies and let their drug dealing boyfriend stay in the house and use it as a place to sell drugs. You know that income isn't reported!

It saddens me that this is even an issue, but it is ridiculous to give to those who won't do for themselves.

Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. Anyone remember that??

I feel for you in your situation. You should have been one of the ones helped. Unfortunately, because of the backwards system we have in place, you couldn't get that assistance.

I couldn't believe that when I heard about it.

Definitely way out of line and they should apologize....but they won't.

Sorry you couldn't get more pity

Those two men are heroes and shouldn't have spent one minute in jail.  Why did Bush allow this?  (It's just another example of why I will be glad to see Bush go.)
I couldn't agree more - it's very sad
To see a country that I served in the Army to protect and service. That I've worked my whole live (since 2nd grade working on a farm and later on to other jobs). My parents/grandparents taught me values, respect, honor, and duty. All of it is being eroded away. Some slick laywer comes in and promises everyone everything. He stands and lies to their faces and they keep following him. It is true that they say they are like sheep because they follow with no thoughts of their own. People will say, oh this has to be approved by congress or that has to be approved. Guess what Congress is now controlled by democrats. They will pass anything and everything produced by the O. You've got mafia type people now advising the O. He's promised them all something and they are demanding it, and not only in our country but our enemies too.

It just sickens me to no end that we did kiss America goodbye, and just a little over 1/2 the country feels this is okay. I too want my country back. Now just have to think of new ways to survive through the next 4 years.

However, I'm still waiting to hear about the outcome of all the lawsuits that are being filed (there are many of them) and he has to comply by 12/1 (I wouldn't even have given him that long - that's too much time to try to falsify a document - again). It also disgusts me too that so many people demanded to see McCain's bc, but they were okay with not having to see the O's. Certainly a different country than what I grew up in.
I couldn't agree more...

...with your post.  I am truly beginning to wonder what the point of voting is.  Is it just to fool the "masses" into thinking they truly have a voice?

I think a lot of Americans adamantly didn't want any more Bushes and didn't want any more Clintons.  I'm feeling somewhat betrayed by Obama and very unhappy with his appointments so far.

This isn't "change."  This is back to the same corrupt regime.

I couldn't agree more, but I just...
...hope that some "homegrown terrorist" doesn't prevent that from happening and/or Bush doesn't find a way to declare martial law indefinitely.  I just keep getting the feeling that something terrible is going to happen before January 20, something with Bush's fingerprints all over it.
I couldn't agree with you more. (sm)

I know what Vietnam did to my ex-boyfriend.  It's not just something that goes away in a few months.  It lasts a lifetime and can even affect future lives yet to be born.

Believe me, I share your anger, and I don't even have a relative who is in the military.  I hope your son comes home soon, safe and healthy.  My heart goes out to you, and if I could find a ((hug)) icon, I'd place it right here.

And it couldn't possibly have anything to do...(sm)

with the fact that we've lost around 3 million jobs this year, and the rate of job losses is not slowing down?  Do yourself a favor.  When you get that check in the mail from the government that you so disagree with, why don't you just send it back with a note saying *Thanks, but no thanks.  I prefer to wait for the trickle.*  I'm sure you'll feel much better about yourself then.

I really find it hard to understand why people like yourself fight so hard against policies that would benefit you.  In case you haven't noticed, the stimulus plan he is proposing IS the middle class bailout.  How many times on this board did pubs say *where's my bailout* during the first bailout?  And now those same people are turning their noses up and trying to act like they are above it simply because a pub isn't the one who is trying to fix this mess.

It's not the economy that's killing this nation.  It's people like you who would rather divide the country than accept the reality that the other side might actually have a good idea.  Nixon would be so proud.

I couldn't get a scholarship that was
set up by the owner of the company my mother, aunts and uncles worked for for 35 years or more. He set it up for the children and grandchildren of the workers. Where does it go? I, nor my children benefited from it, yet they refused to tell me where this money was going. I had a right to a scholarship, yet was turned down immediately without them even looking at my background.
