...the final version of the Patriot Act was approved for vote by Congress just before a 5-day recess. During that recess Republican leaders and operatives re-worked it to include the worst and most controversial 16 clauses. They dropped it off in congressional offices at midnight on the night before the vote to enact was to take place. Congress re-convened in the morning after the five-day recess and voted as scheduled, not having had time to re-read the huge bill, indeed not even being aware that it was not the same bill they had agreed to approve before the recess.
THAT is basically how the Republicans and the White House managed to TRICK both Congress and us into accepting this dangerous act and the worst of its provisions. It's the only way they could have! - so when you hear them say "well you VOTED for it!" you can be sure it's just more dirty business and cheats on top of cheats!
Democrats are trying to hold hearings on the worst of the abuses that have already been recorded under this act, but Republicans are doing their best to smother any discussion - up to and including illegally ending last week's hearing, forcefully shutting off microphones and knocking the C-span cameras off the air (leaving the astonished C-span commentators to remark they'd never seen anything like this before!). Let's face it - the Republican party has become something really dangerous and distasteful, apparently wanting to hold itself above the law and answer to no one while it further erodes and restricts our former inalienable rights.
