I worked in the office until the state downsized and closed it. It's a small community in the midwest. Job situation isn't perfect, but it's not as bad as many other places since there are 3 cities within driving distance. The people I am referring to are the ones who have been on it since they were old enough to apply 10-20 years ago (if you want a more specific example, my husband's niece who has had 6 kids at taxpayer's expense, has never had a job, and got evicted from her housing unit for not paying the $34/month rent, instead using her assistance checks to buy a car). If you are receiving public aid here you are basically given a free college education. Few pursue that either. As I said before, I in no way mean that ALL people on public aid are lazy. I know plenty of recipients who do use it the way it was meant to be used - to help them out while they get back on their feet. I guess you would have to see it to believe it.
