I'm curious about how many other dems oppose
I think that if all they are required to do by 03/31/09 is to come up with a plan, then that is probably a reasonable expectation. The devil is in the details here. According to WaPo, "the companies would be required by March 31 to cut costs, restructure debt and obtain concessions from labor sufficient to report a "positive net present value," said Joel Kaplan, White House deputy chief of staff for policy. I am confused as to exactly what "sufficient to REPORT positive net present value" means. If by that they mean they should be in the black by March 31, that part most definitely does not seem feasible, but if the path to solvency is the short-term goal, then one would hope that management, the union and creditors would be able to comply with the cloud of pending bankruptcy looming.

However, my gut tells me that even that may be more than what the parties will be willing to do. It seems that if they cannot even come up with a plan by them, the repayment requirement is sort of a red herring, unless there is a way to make it a stipulation of the ensuing Chapter 11 proceedings, which I believe is what the act specifies. While I can understand the snag they have run into over the inclusion of the word "federal" versus the more far-reaching federal and state requirements for fuel efficiency (were the word eliminated), I am hopeful that they can get beyond that squabble by including the word, but phasing in the more stringent state requirements over a longer period of time.

Having said all that, I am one of those democrats who does not march lock-step on this issue, any more than I supported the original TARP bail-outs. While I do not want to see the automakers disappear, I do believe that they should go the way of Chapter 11 now and (I can't believe I am saying this) I would much rather see the republicans succeed in their filibuster!

On the contrary, it indicts the Bush admin...
...just as much as their refusal to listen to warnings from the outgoing Clinton administration about Al Qaeda, and just as much as Bush's initial refusal to appoint a 9/11 commission at all. It's totally consistent with the belief that they have tried to block any serious investigation into the events of 9/11 (and silence anyone who could shed some light on it). Business as usual for them! I'm glad that crappy hand-picked group of power suckups have all been caught with their pants down. If the MSM is ignoring the story at all it's not because it puts Clinton (you know, the one who actually caught and jailed real terrorists who were responsible for attacks right here in the US)in a bad light - if a story gets ignored these days it's because it has the potential to shame Bush further. If that's possible.
Absolutely! If you want 8 more years of the Bush Admin! nm

The people in the Bush admin that authorized
We must remedy this. If the next administration does not at least investigate here, they too are complicit.
With the help of a whole bunch of dems...Pelosi, Reid, Franks, Dodds, Obama...

Bush is not really a republican - he's in his own circle
To bash or criticize the republican party because of Bush? There are factions in these parties. Bush is not part of the republican party that cares about the people. He's in a whole different group. Not fair to lump all republicans in the same group as Bush. That would be like me judging all the democrats because of Nancy Pelosi or Barney Frank or Chris Dodd or Hillary Clinton. Totally unfair. Bush doesn't care about the American people. There are a lot of decent republican senators and congress people that do care about America and the people and are trying to do the right thing. Unfortunately now we have a dictatorship in there so doubt anything good will happen for the American citizens. At least before this last election we had checks and balances. Now it's all one side. WAY not good!!! Would you like it if everyone was a republican and no democrats had any input into anything? I don't think so. We need an equal balance. We do not have it here and it's getting worse and worse with each day.
Transcript: Democratic response to Pres. Bush's

Good morning. This is Congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the House Majority Leader.

Over the past several months, Democrats and Republicans in Congress have negotiated a bipartisan extension of the highly successful childrens health insurance program known as CHIP - a program enacted by a Republican-controlled Congress in 1997, with strong Democratic support, and signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

CHIP provides health insurance coverage for over six and one-half million American children in families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance.

However, millions of other children who are currently eligible for this health insurance are not enrolled due to the programs limited resources.

To address this, our bipartisan legislation provides funding for approximately four million more children - ensuring that at least 10 million low-income children in our nation receive the health care coverage they need and deserve. Thats good for them and for our country.

This legislation does not change current eligibility guidelines. It simply strengthens CHIPs financing, covers more low-income children, and improves the quality of care they receive.

Sadly, on Wednesday, President Bush - in the face of bipartisan majorities in Congress, and contrary to the will of the American people - vetoed our bipartisan bill.

The President claims - wrongly - that this bill is fiscally irresponsible.

The truth is, this legislation is fully paid for. It does not add one nickel to the deficit or to the debt.

Furthermore, under the Presidents proposal more than 800,000 children who now receive coverage under CHIP would lose that coverage.

The President claims that this legislation would lead to a government takeover of health insurance. He is wrong.

The truth is, Americas largest private insurance lobbying group supports this bill - as do Americas doctors, nurses, childrens advocates, 43 governors, and, most importantly, 72 percent of Americans.

The claims made against this bill are simply wrong.

As Senator Pat Roberts, a senior Republican from Kansas, recently said: I am not for excessive spending and strongly oppose the federalization of health care. And if the Administrations concerns with this bill were accurate, I would support a veto. But, Senator Roberts added: Bluntly put, they are not.

Most puzzling of all, perhaps, is the fact that the Presidents veto violates his own campaign promise.

In 2004, at the Republican National Convention, the President promised (and I quote): In a new term, we will lead an aggressive effort to enroll millions of children who are eligible but not signed up for government health insurance programs. We will not allow, he said, a lack of attention, or information, to stand between these children and the health care they need.

But he has done just that.

But the Congress has done exactly what the President said he was going to do, if re-elected.

Yet today, the only thing standing between millions of American children and the health insurance they need and deserve is one person. The President is saying no to these children he promised to help.

This is a defining moment for this Congress.

In the words of Senator Charles Grassley, a Republican of Iowa, weve got to do what we can to try to override the Presidents veto.

In the days ahead, we will work to persuade many of our Republican colleagues, who insist on standing with the President, to instead join the bipartisan majorities in Congress - and Americas children - in overriding this veto.

I urge all of you: Contact your Member of Congress.

Ask them to support our children.

Ask them to do what the President promised to do when he sought re-election.

Ask them to vote to override the Presidents veto and ensure health care for our kids and for their future.

Thank you for listening. This is House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

wow, what a brilliant response...boy wonder can only use Bush as an excuse for a few more months...
then he owns it.
Bush had a republican congress for 6 years and,.sm
for the last 2 years we had a republican president, who was always threatening to veto, and a democratic congress by a very small margin. You can't blame everything on the democrats for the last 2 years.
I am not a Republican. Yes, I voted for Bush the first time....
and voted for him the second time because I did not think John Kerry was the right man for the job. If another Democrat had won the nomination I might well have voted Democrat the last round.

The democrats have had control of Congress for the past 2 years. Their involvement in the fannie/freddie thing and their total unwillingness to accept any of the responsibility has me voting a straight Republican ticket this year and I have NEVER done that before. Because the idea of Barack Obama AND a democratic majority makes NE nauseous. The country deserves better.

Bush = 6 years before Dems took
a tiny barely majority in Congress, but not enough to override his vetos, and the damage was already done by then, so yes, BUSH and the republicans are completely to blame.
If these were Bush appointees, the dems would be
nm
Right! Bush leadership and republican congress tanked us

The Dems voted right along with Bush. Things go

Anger at Bush is well justified - he and his Republican Congress put us in this mess...nm

All who oppose your party extreme? I put US first.

I bet you oppose deer hunting too...huh.

I highly doubt that this would be allowed if there were few wolves.  It is like deer.  When people opposed hunting and the deer population grew so big that the deer couldn't find enough food and they starved.  I think I'd much rather an animal be shot and killed and used for leather, fur, or meat than starve in a low painful death.   These animals rights people amaze me sometimes.  Just like stating we can't use windmills for energy because something about the pressure would explode bats' lungs.  Okay...so lets just keep using oil from other countries and paying out the @ss for gas instead of allowing windmills because of those poor bats.  Give me a break!

I'm not for killing just to kill, but if an animal is used for meat and fur....I have no problem with that.

Just like the killer market.  When a poor quality horse was auctioned off, it could be bought by the killer market and used for meat and other things.  The animal rights people did away with this and now the horse market is full of junk horses.  The value of horses has plumeted.

I'm not one for cruelty but there is a difference between killing an animal and putting its meat, etc. to use than just torturing and slowly killing an animal and then letting the carcass go to waste.

North Korea: Engage, Appease, Oppose

A little bit of history on North Korea and the dilemma. Read the rest of the article from the link below.

"So it's another step backwards again with North Korea.

In defiance of a Security Council resolution (1718) passed after its first nuclear test in 2006, it has now announced a second. It has also implied that it has solved some at least of the problems it encountered in the first.

The actual technical achievement remains to be examined. But the test itself represents a continued belligerency whose destination is unknown. "

This admin. doesn't ALLOW itself to be put on trial.
What a copout! - it's only accusations! And that's all it's ever likely to be because this administration with the help of its corrupt and partisan congressional majority simply refuses to allow any independent inquiry into its crooked dealings. Let's not pretend that we actually have a balance of power in the federal govt. sufficient to allow normal due process to occur. So go on with your just accusations simpering - try these crimes in an international court and see how long they stay that way.
You have 3 jobs because the former admin. rewards
driving MT wages down. If US MT's were the company's first choice of employees, and not their last, maybe you & the rest of us would have one, regular 40-hour a week job with health insurance and paid vacations once again. Don't you miss having a day off once in a while? Being able to afford fresh bread instead of day-old? And believing that your work actually made a difference? 'Cause it sure doesn't now. That's why you're working 3 jobs. Because you have to. Not because MT is such an enjoyable and rewarding profession that you just cant get enough of it.
Another classy response. I won't say liberal response,
because I don't think you and these pile-on posters are indicative of liberals as a whole. Don't know why they let you speak for them...but that is up to them. Obviously you don't think compassion is a personality trait...obviously you feel that it can be turned on and off to suit your agenda. So be it.
Admin...we have someone codoning terror on this board

You may notify admin of their email address,
and that can be blocked as well. Usually there is a link in the email that says report as spam, which will direct you to admin@mtstars.com

First proposed addition to Obama's admin....
Rahm Emanuel.  Headed the effort to re-elect Richard Daley mayor of Chicago...firmly entrenched in the Chicago political machine.  "From work earlier in his career, Emanuel considers Mayor Richard M. Daley, Senator Paul Simon and President Bill Clinton to be his professional mentors."  Could this be the shape of things to come?  Doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy so far.
My word, have you gone nuts?
holy cow.  Repeat yourself much?  Go crazy much?  You would be amusing in a freak show sort of way if it weren't so pathetic.  Geez.  Time for your meds?
I don't have nuts to be off, but if you want the facts

check out this link and it shows all of the politicians and your MASTER is at #2.

Conspiracy Nuts
Wow, now I know how crazy we must have looked supporting Gore in the recount and steadfastly hanging on to hope since he had won more of the popular vote. It's time to let it go and move on. Obama is the president-elect. Deal with it and focus your energy where it can be beneficial to someone. Yikes, get over it you sound like nut jobs.
certifiably nuts
"I think she's a certifiable nut, but isn't she majoring in psychology?"

The two aren't anywhere near mutually exclusive!

Personally, I think the solution here is a state-ordered shotgun wedding between her and the IVF doctor.
There will always be nuts in this world...nm
nm
Definitely nuts, but not entirely stupid

Will Obama do anything but follow the UN in being ''gravely concerned'' and issuing ''stern warnings''?  And hasn't Obama already said it's not up to the (arrogant) US to say who gets a nuclear program and who does not?

After his failed Kuwait invasion, remember how long S. Hussein strung the UN along, refusing to allow inspections, pounding his chest, playing bad@ss, and trying really hard NOT to prove to the world he did not have WMDs.  Well, his saber rattling was convincing enough to get himself invaded and his butt kicked.

A few years of this from NK, and they may actually have a guidance system capable hitting something (other than ocean.)   Such petty tyrants have a track record of not playing very well with other nations and I am sure it really amuses them to repeatedly cross the lines drawn by the UN, which they believe is a toothless organization more suited to administering Meals-on-Wheels programs than ensuring the safety of the planet.

I doubt Colin Powell would ever speak out against this admin.
It's not in his nature to be a whistle blower.

I will say though I have ALWAYS admired him, before he joined the Bush admin. I had great respect for him; in fact, when I learned that he was a republican I was surprised. I felt we had a lot in common politically. While I am a democrat, I consider myself an independent thinker and do not always vote a straight democratic ticket.

I still had respect for him though as sec of state in Bush's admin. It did turn my stomach though when he made the case for this war, I felt he was either being lied to and was falling for it or felt he had to support it because of his political affiliation.

If you've ever heard him speak publically, he's very down to earth and nonpolitical in his nature. Much to be admired still in this man.
you must be referring to the previous admin. - GW didn't like to read much......
he did miss that memo about an impending attack on our country using our own private airlines..........Boy wonder? Must be referring to his super hero underwear.
To what the heck? - our country has gone nuts
This is absolute garbage (no not your message), but the fact that people will support this solely because it's Obama's plan. If Bush decided to bring terrorist to the country for "trials" all these same boards praising Obama for doing it would be cursing and cutting down Bush. Double standards! These people should be tried in their own country with an independent jury/judge from various countries. One poster below was right. We do not have enough rooms in our jail as it is. Also they are missing the point. He is not bringing just ordinary prisoners (thieves, etc), he is bringing terrorists and some of them will be released into our society. This is absolute crapola! Their lord could be caught on camera stabbing someone over and over and they'd say "oh that person probably deserved it". I am so disgusted with this country and their double standards.
How are they NOT nuts? Those points could be counted
sheesh
Dont bother with () - she's NUTS.

Obama admin. skeptical of Iran's election results.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/13/official-obama-administration-skeptical-irans-election-results/

U.S. officials are casting doubt over the results of Iran's election, in which the government declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner Saturday.

U.S. analysts find it "not credible" that challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi would have lost the balloting in his hometown or that a third candidate, Mehdi Karoubi, would have received less than 1 percent of the total vote, a senior U.S. officials told FOX News.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khameini apparently has released a statement calling the results "final" and hailing the election as a legitimization of the regime and its elections.

Turnout appears to have reached 82 percent, an all-time high. But when asked if the turnout figures should be considered suspect, given the "not credible" counts for Mousavi and Karoubi, the official said: "Oh, it has to be [considered suspect]."

There are already reports of violence outside Mousavi's campaign headquarters, and of huge demonstrations for both sides in central Tehran, with Mousavi trying to make his way to the one in his behalf. Even if widespread violence occurs, analysts see no prospect that this event would lead to a full-scale attempt at revolution or the toppling of the regime.

The dominant view among Obama administration officials, though not uncontested, is that the regime will look so bad as a result of whipping up Iranian hopes for democracy and then squelching them that the regime may feel compelled to show some conciliatory response to President Obama's gestures of engagement.

oh nuts ....leave her alone already...haven't you piled on enough
go bother someone else
Every religion has it nuts...remember 9-11? Just checking.
By the way...calling yourself Christian does not make you one.
You are driving them nuts with the truth, Shelly.

How are anti-abortion people nuts
when we as a country are allowing doctors to murder babies that could survive outside of its mother's womb?  I am not for abortion but I don't condone violence at abortion clinics either.  You have, once again, grouped us all into one huge group and title us as nut cases.  I am so sick and tired of a few people doing crazy things and people like you, JTBB, running with it and grouping us all into that.  That is close minded and just plain pathetic.  Someone who is against waterboarding but has no problem killing babies that could survive outside of its mother.  WTH is wrong with some of you people?  Let's be nice to people who want us dead but by all means kill a baby we don't want even though it could survive outside of the womb.  That makes a whole he!! of a lot of sense, huh?  Wise up!
The Anti-Republican Republican Who is Really a Republican
The whole anti-Republican Republican ruse might have succeeded, were it not for the fact that McCain's rhetoric was at odds not merely with his own voting record - 90 percent with Bush - and his own Bush-on-steroids agenda.

Even as he was pledging to "change the way government does almost everything," the senator from Arizona announced his commitment to much, much more of the same.

He pledged to maintain endless occupations of distant lands that empty the U.S. Treasury of precious resources that might pay for infrastructue renewal, housing and job creations initiatives for hurting Americans.

He outlined trade and tax policies that would extend, rather than alter a failed economic status quo.

He reintroduced flawed proposals for health care, education and entitlement reforms that Americans have wisely rejected.

And he threatened to achieve "energy independence" by declaring:

    "We will drill..."

    "We'll drill..."

    "More drilling..."

McCain's rhetoric was that of a liberated man declaring his independence from his party's failed president and corrupt Congresses.

But his platform was that of Republican candidate who, for all of his talk of reform, offers the crudest continuity to a country that is crying out for change.

Bunch of wussies
Which is why we are where we are right now..We are pansies, wussies.  We dont take a stand, we are wishy washy.  I am just acting like a republican and striking back and using the good old smear campaign that republicans have perfected.  You continue to be quiet, mild mannered and you will get no where in today's politics.  Hate??  Nah.  I hate no one.  Im just playing the same game the republicans are playing.  What is good for one is good for the other..I think it is fun watching the lying opposition squirm, makes me smile.
Boy that's a whole bunch of people.
Please provide evidence that backs up your claim that liberals always, always utilize name-calling.  Not sure exactly how many million people that it just in the U.S.  Does this also include Europeans, etc.?  Please share where you got this information.  Seems like kind of a ridiculous claim, but that's just my opinion.
What a bunch of prudes.
besides that, I think the whole nation is due for a HUGE party after having endured 8 years of W and a perfectly wretched presidential campaign. An exciting celebration is just what the doctor ordered in the midst of a collapsing economy, the post dismal holiday blues and unemployment/food stamp and jobless rates at highest in decades. What would you have them do? Sit around reviewing their shrinking 401Ks or file their taxes perhaps? Sheesh. Lighten up, will ya?
what a bunch of hicks
Watch CNBC for the rest of the week 24/7 and then vote.
what a bunch of negative
