Hi, I just got an offer for a day job with benefits but I want to do about 1000 lines of MT a week from home.

Anyone have any recommendations about a company I can do that with?

I just graduated Everett Community College's program.

I do clinic notes and it still took me nearly 4 weeks to get to 1000 lines.  I only hit 1000 lines once, maybe twice a week.  Other than that I stay steady around 700.  I would imagine ESL dictators in acute care would have taken me 6 to 8 weeks to hit 1000 and I probably would not hit 1000 very often either.
A lot of companies required 1000 to 1200 lines a day. If you are just
starting out you can expect to do about half that unless you have an easy account.
FT is usually 5000 lines a week and - sm
PT is usually 2500 lines a week. I have never heard 2500 for FT and 1500 for PT a week. I hear the hiring rate is 5-7 cpl. The most you will probably get is .08 after a few years, unless it keeps going down which I hope does not happen.
Most places offering PT want minimum of 600 lpd. 1000-
s
As you'll hear 1000 times, there IS no school that SM

can offer an MT certificate. You have to take the test through AAMT.

Also, what offices and hospitals want? A person who can sit down and do their work without a lot of discussion or BS. Just get the work out, make it correct. I was in a hiring position for several years at the largest hospital in my state. I didn't care about certification. I cared about test performance.

Of course a CMT behind your name means A LOT. That test is very difficult and, for the most part, if you have passed that test, no more discussion is necessary.

New here and about to graduate next week
Hi..
I'm new here.
My name is Danielle, Dani for short. I'm an almost newly-graduated medical transcriptionist student. i will finish my one year course from GTCC in Jamestown, NC next week. I've already started looking for work.

I have one question though...as a newly graduated MT, where are the best places to look for work? the only major transcription experience i have is through the 10 week internship that was required of the program that I am enrolled in. Any suggestions or advice would be helpful. Dani from Greensboro, NC

going for interview next week...
that had asked for 2 years experience but not required. I was told that I meet the minimum requirements for their company and they want me to test with them.
Some jobs are only 20 hrs a week, but you will need
s
I'm a week away from completing

my MT course and would like to set up an email just for work. What service would you all recommend? Are there any requirements when it comes to emailing confidential documents?

New hire within a week, put no experience
I graduated from Career Step and a week later I had a job lined up as an IC.  In every application I sent out, I made sure that the employers were aware that I was just starting out.  I DID NOT say that I had 2 years of experience.  Career Step does not say to use their education as experience when applying.  Many companies recognize CS as a decent school and these companies will give us a shot.
I've got a week or so before I call...
...them back and accept, but if they're hiring more, I'll post it.  My advice is to just apply like crazy!  I applied even to places that said they wanted full-time MTs.  Why not?  You never know.  Maybe they'll have that little "extra" work and will keep you in mind, or you might just hit them at the right time and place.  Good luck to you!
did it in 9 months of about 35 or so hours a week
Worked HARD those hours too! :-)
I was typing 150lph my first week. sm

It certainly isn't impossible.  No, it isn't great pay for someone who has a skill that is needed and is good at it, but you do need to start somewhere.  I don't think companies are willing to start newbies out at 7-9cpl because they can and do hire experienced MTs at that rate.  Why should they take a chance on someone unproven when they can get someone who has been in the industry 5+ years at the same rate?  That doesn't happen in any profession that I know of.

I've been a working MT now for just under a year and can type 300 lph doing acute care and more if I am doing podiatry.  Even at 6-7 cpl I can make a decent amount of money.  I'd love to be getting more money, but that just isn't happening.  Look at the job boards, most companies are advertising for 3-5 years experience starting at 7-9cpl, any higher than that is not the norm.  Is it fair?  Probably not, but it is the reality of this industry.  Those who don't love their work, are not good at it, or are only in it for the money will be getting out and finding another profession.  That will leave less competition and eventually the wages will begin to go up again.

I think there has just been a huge surge in new people entering MT in the last few years because of all the 'get rich quick' ads out there, but people are starting to realize this isn't an easy job.

Who knows, maybe I'm just too optomistic.

i did their transcription test last week
and i had some blanks, but i heard back from them today.  they offered me a spot in the training program.
I work 38 hours a week, here is my schedule
I did reply to your post below as well and hope I didn't not offend you. Here is my schedule, it works great for me and for my family. I get Friday nights, all day and night Saturday off, and am still able to attend church with my family on Sunday morning before having to work.
Sun. noon-9pm.
Mon. 8pm-1am
Tues. 8pm-1am
Wed. 6pm-1am
Thur. 8pm-midnight
Fri. 10am-6pm
I have to be up at 6:30 in the morning getting the older kids ready and off to school, but my little ones pretty much sleep through the night and I often catch a little nap with them during the day if I need one. I feel like I have the best of both worlds........stay home mom with my kids, and working and bringing in income. My DH only works a half day on Fridays so he is home before I start my shift at 10. Maybe you could ask for a trial period of a work schedule and make changes where you seem fit with your supervisor. I used to work a split shift, early a.m. and then again later at night, but found that to be quite draining and it made the days seem very long, but that is just me. Good luck, you will find what works best for you. :)
I was lucky if I made $1 an hour my first week! sm
It was horrible! After a month, I am now up to $8 an hour.(I know that is still not much!) I would look up every single drug and doublecheck the dosages. Now, I am familar with many of them and it feels good not to have to look them all up. It is great that your company thinks you are doing good work!
7 years with national - 30 hours per week -
a little over 16 thousand - Good luck making 25 thousand plus - not easy at all to make especially if you type a lot of ESL.
Definitely sounds like a scam. You can't learn much in an 8-week course. NM

Med-Line School: Enrolling this week!
Why would anyone post such negative responses if you have no knowledge of this school or no experience with them? Actual transcriptionists are usually too busy to be on these chat rooms making up stories. Might be an M-Tec employee making the response. Did you know that M-Tec is a 20 million a year school? That is a lot of students that they are cranking out.......and they have jobs for all of these?

Med-Line provides a free orientation via webinar for anyone to attend that answers your questions. I have attended this webinar and I am enrolling after looking at ALL of the schools. It explains proper education to be successful and they actually place their students, not just give resume tips. And the internship is a real work experience with 100% QA support and feedback. No keys. Why don't you check it out for yourself and not listen to these people who have no experience with these schools.

Oh and by the way...it’s the 21 century and there are air cards. Internet is everywhere...

Didn't she sell it, or just your company to an offshore company. The woman

has a screw loose.

A woman told me this week her community college "certified" her as an MT.
I think the problem is the people who are teaching those courses don't know the difference. It isn't really a lie. They just don't know better. Of course they also shouldn't be teaching a subject they know little or nothing about, but that's for another thread, another time.
Maybe do a word count in some of your documents and get an average per day or week. Total for new
s
No, the woman who owns this company can't transcribe herself, much less run a company.

Any company that charges anything to work is not a reputable company. However,
if a company offers a job and requires that you have a certain pedal and offers to provide it and then take it out of say your first paycheck or couple of paychecks, then that is acceptable.

My belief is that companies that charge you for software or anything else is trying to make money off of you.

While $11.95 isn't much, figure that amount times 10 or 20 or 100 and what do you come up with? Smells like a scam to me.
company was sold so they have no company to hire you after graduation!
They are not a reputable school and I went there so I should know. Even when they did have Trans. Relief Services they never answered my email about employment upon graduation.
Along the same lines
I went to a Community College in my city and received my MT certification. Most of my classes were online (only one class required me to go to campus). I could have opted to take them on campus, but because of my other obligations at the time, online was easier for me. I was hired by a national right out of school.

Dont feel bad I am fairly new too. 7 months. I don't know exactly how many lines per hour I can do but I don't think it is even 150.
500 lines per day?
I was wondering about how long it takes to type 500 lines per day.  I am just starting as a transcriptionist, and they want me to type at least 500 lines per day.  Is this a lot?
500 lines
I am also a newbie. 500 lines isn't really a lot. It is possible even as a newbie to do that. As a newbie your first few days or week on an account you may not get 500 until you learn what you are doing. But then 500 is easily possible.
how many lines
How many lines do you put out per pay period??
lines

I think you need to specify the pay period.  One week, two weeks, a month?

I am a new MT.  I have only been working for 6 weeks.  I get paid every two weeks.  My first pay period was 3500 lines, second was 3000 (I went on vacation), and my third, which ended yesterday, was 7400.  I expect that by the beginning of the summer I will be up to 1000/day, 5000/week, and 10000/pay period.

But I also have children who need to be picked up from school, and I cannot exactly get a bunch of work done while they are home, nor do I want to.  I am not sure how things will go this summer.  I may have to work at night while they are sleeping.

lines
how many lines per pay period???
# of lines

What is an average number of lines per day for a new MT (typing 60 WPM)?

On average, how long (in minutes) is the typical dictation?

# of lines
I realize I will be stopping to look up words for whatever reason and that it won't be straight typing without interruptions. I was just trying to get a ball park figure, that's all. Thanks anyway
500 lines
If it is ASR it should only take about 1-1/2 hours or less. If it is regular transcription it should take a little longer.
Lines
Lines are counted different ways. Sometimes they are counted gross lines, sometimes 65-character lines, sometimes 65 characters without spaces. You should really ask your teacher how they would like you to count them. I do not think that blank lines would count though.
Lines
Build your expansions, that is the key. After many years at this, I am still adding expansions almost every day. A split keyboard also helped me as the poster below suggested. I also started out very slow also. Don't worry, you will get there.
My very first day as an MT I did 667 lines. I had had no

MT training, wasn't a fast typist, had no expander.

You can't compare number of reports because reports vary.  If you are doing clinic note they are usually short.  If you are doing acute care history and physicals they can be quite lengthy, same with consults.   I can do 40 reports one day and only do 28 reports the next, but still get the same number of lines both days.

As a newbie you should do the best you can and not worry about what everyone else is doing.

Or more lines as indicated below - nm
x
I would not take less than $48 as 60 minutes is est. at 600 lines - sm
$48 would be .08 a line. Granted he is giving you 48 hours to do it, and it will take anywhere from 3-6 hours to do depending on degree of difficulty, if you have to look up addresses, Dr. spelling, etc. All that SLOWS you WAY DOWN. $40 is only .066 a line IF it comes out to 600 lines, granted if it is less than that you make more $$$, but if more than 600 lines (say he is a fast talker) then you will get reamed. I'd get a sample first before you agree to anything. Good luck.
How much lines per hour?
Thanks everybody for providing me information few days ago, but I still dont get it how a new MT can type 75 to 100lph because I am able to type hardly 350 lines in 8 hours, this is after the correction i mean grammer, trying to find drug names, etc.
350 lines in 8 hours?
That really isn't much. You should be spending time when you aren't working studying *grammar* and such. I am a newbie, have been at this since January, and can get at least 150 lph. So far I am able to get about 9,000 lines per pay period...that's 10 days. Not trying to bash you or anything, but it sounds like you really need some practice. Websites like www.rxlist.com are great for drug names as well.
How *many* lines per hour...do you have a
nm
My very first day I typed something like 150 lines
for 8 whole hours.  My supervisor looked at the line count and made the clerk do a re-count, lol, surely they made a mistake!  Nope, it was me.  By the end of four months I was off of hourly training pay and on incentive doing about 1600 lines per day.  It will come if you work at it.  When you first start, your head is in books most of the time too, so this is taking away from your typing.  Just keep at it.
I do 1200 lines per day

as a FT IC.  This takes me anywhere from 5-6 hours normally, on a bad day it can take me 12 hours when I get distracted.  The point is that you will get faster with time.  I don't use expansion programs or macros, for me it is just faster to type what they say rather than try to remember what my "codes" are.  I have been doing transcription now for 15 years and it does take some time to get the hang of things, even when I started this job it was taking me my full 8 hours to do 1000 lines, then I was noticing I was getting it done in 4-5 hours so I upped my line committment.

I started out full time at home when I was pregnant with my first child, it is difficult to organize your time with kids at home but there are ways around it and still be very productive.  Where is your computer?  I used to keep mine downstairs so that I could still be with my kids and give them stuff to do and watch them but still work at the same time.

Good luck and hang in there, it will get quicker for you!

500 lines for a newbie
I have only been working for 8 weeks.  It takes me 4-5 hours to do 500 lines.  Somedays, it takes less.  It depends on if I have to look up meds or procedures.  I also do clinic work, not acute.
keep in mind that lines w/o spaces
average of 30% - so if you are getting 150 lph w/o spaces, it is the equivalent to 180 lph with spaces.
Can you say where you work that you can get lines that easily? Thx. nm
s
How do you make lines and maintain quality?
I'm trying to get up to company's line requirements but do not seem to be catching all my errors. Any suggestions?
I've always lost the first lines that were typed when
they come back on and change what they had said.  The report needs to make sense and if he is obviously going in another direction, it's just easier to start over.  It doesn't seem fair, but that is they way I have always done it.  Now, if you had typed a paragraph or so and he just hung up or got cut off, I would leave a QA marker and send it in and get the lines.
200 lines an hour is way beyond minimum expected
