Misery loves company! How long have you been looking? Where did you train? I've been searching for months, but cant seem to get my foot in the door anywhere. Incredibly frustrating for me - I have a graduate level education, so i am no idiot, but still can't seem to land a job as a newbie MT. Grrrrr!

Our local hospital group has a few people in
radiology and pathology, but the rest has been outsourced for about 25 years. Hospitals are looking to cut costs where they can. There are still MTs who work for the hospital, just not in-house.
If you need a job you do what you have to do. If the US MTs don't take the jobs guess where they will go. I make more working at home per line than what any hospital pays that I have seen. I don't have insurance (because it is outragenously priced), but I do have some benefits. Also working at home you have fewer expenses, so it pretty much equals out.

I took the AHP course about 11 years ago but before I finished the course, I was hired by a group of doctors. I have worked for them for the past 10 years. I was going to go back and finish the course but they more or less trained me for what they needed. I thought the course was okay because it was all I knew about at the time. I did not have this forum to know what else was out there. I know that in order to work for a national company or a hospital, I would have to take a refresher course that is offered by one of the "Top 3" schools. But I think that if you find a private practice physician who does not really emphasize following every rule in the BOS you should be okay. There are jobs out there.
AHP Support
I am also enrolled with AHP. I am almost done with Course 1 and I'm loving every minute of it. I have also read all the negative remarks about AHP, but I have to do what works best for me. I have been in touch with some people who have graduated from AHP and they are doing just fine. Good luck to everyone!!

I wanted to let everyone know that I contacted a local hospital (Kalamazoo, MI) and they said they hire students who are still in training and graduates. She also said that as long as you have taken anatomy, psysiology, medical terminology and have computer/typing skills, they can show you the rest. They work side by side with you anywhere from 3 months to a year until they feel you are ready. The pay? $11 - $17 per hour. So, check with local hospitals in your area. That may be the best place to start out. I am planning on working on site for a while before I work from home. I could use the experience and support of fellow transcriptionists.

I see that you have been employed since graduation, but I think what I am hearing is that you are not happy with your choice of companies and would like to make some changes? Support for AHP students and graduates
I would like to get any support or encouragement from other people who have either completed the AHP course or are currently taking it. I have read so many negative comments in here about the program. I am about 3/4 through the MT course and am now getting a little worried. Please share your stories and job searches to give the rest of us some hope. If all you have is negative comments, please keep them to yourself. This is meant to be a support group. Thanks!

Have you tried calling the Grad Services Department?
As Mr. Tech Support so accurately said...

It does not matter if you type fast or slow, if you don't know what you should type.
I felt I had all the support I wanted when I needed it.
However, you need to remember that the course is self-study. You need to be prepared (and I think you are) to work mostly on your own because that is how it will be once you graduate and get a job. I think you will find that you do not need to contact them much, as that is the way their course is designed. Take advantage of the online student group they hold weekly, post on their message boards, and involve yourself. You get out of it what you put in. :-) I think you have the right idea!
I graduated in 9 months and had recruiters banging down my door to test with them. I was working within 2 days of graduation and never looked back. I still enjoy it after 5-1/2 years!

I have been offered a job with TTS and can't find any info on them. They are located in New Hampshire. They had a job posting on the job seekers board here so I was hoping somebody had some information. Thank you!
Allie- you need good teacher support
Hi Allie,
If you received poor support at your community college, then they are probably not that good. But, I'd talk to the person who teaches the class before I gave up on them. It could be a matter of a clerk who didn't care enough and not a teacher problem. Good teachers made all the difference during my educations.
We require a teacher or counselor for every 6 to 10 students when we staff by training. We prefer experienced MTs be the contact person and teacher. Everyone wants to train at home now. But, except for the gifted, we all need teachers to help us when we get stuck. IMO, students don't get stuck in anatomy, physiology and terminology. They get stuck typing, doing good research and handling their computer correctly. They get lost in the templates and software too. Ideally, it would be nice to have a mentor, if not; you at least need to be sure you get a teacher for the transcription typing part of your lessons.
